Recommendations for a good 2D game engine to purchase

I'm looking to purchase a quality 2D game engine. Well, before I'm looking to purchase one I'm looking to do a little research on it - I have no idea which 2D engines are popular. I tried googling some searches but I mostly get point and click programs (any good? ). Thanks for the help!

Edit: Of course, multiple engines = good. If one's more catered to one genre like Run and Gunners rather than Puzzlers, that cool. Everything is welcome.
