I'm looking to upgrade the ram in my home computer from 1gb to 2gb. What is the best quality stick of 1gb ram I can buy, and how much will it cost me?

I forget the specfic kind of ram I have (I don't know shit about computers), if that matters, but I'll check when I get home. Then why am I posting this now instead of waiting until I get home you ask? To that I say fuck you. Fuck you.

You can also just go to www.crucial.com
Simply list your PC/Mac config and it gives you all the data you need along with some of the better prices out there.

A+ company. :buttrock:

Don't pay more for Memory due to the company that makes it. The generic RAM works just as good and last just as long.

Not from my experience. Not at all.

Generic ram is shit. If you're using your PC for gaming or other shit that needs lots of power, get something good.

Anyone that knows anything about PCs will disagree with that. Try finding some generic that OCs as well as some kingston hyperX or corsair XMS. You can't. There is a reason people pay out the ass for this stuff.

Matt

EDIT: Stinky: it's best to get the same brand and speed of memory that you already have under the hood. Ram can be finicky and often doesn't like to be mixed and matched.

Right, but in this case, Dinkins admits that he doesn't know much about computers so he likely won't be doing any overclocking.

Either way, people shouldn't be making rediculous blanket statements. Also, even if you're not OCing, it's not always easy to get generic running at cas2 even if it's advertised as such.

So the Corsair XMS is good stuff?

Right now I have two sticks of 512, so if I yank out both sticks wouldn't it be fine to replace them with two 1gb sticks of that corsair XMS?

It should be fine. Just gotta make sure your motherboard can handle whatever ram you buy. Or maybe not. It might just not run to it's full potential or something. (I'm smart and stupid)

How do I do that (I'm full-on stupid)?

Well, the answer to this is either yes or no (that's all I can tell you at this point.)

Yah, that would work fine, although I'd evaluate why you'd want to go to 2gb. 1gb should be more than enough for the average person, and unless you're doing some serious video editing you won't notice a difference.

ANd corsair XMS and kingston hyperX (and to a lesser extent OCZ gold) are considered the gold standards of ram right now. But unless you're doing some overclocking, I wouldn't spend that much. www.crucial.com is a great place for normal people to get ram at close to generic ram prices that runs stable and at advertised speeds.

We use no name brand RAM at my job. Most the PC's are left on 24/7 except for a 1 hour down time once a week. Never once has a RAM chip been a problem or failed.

EDIT: Then again, the company I work for isn't very important.

well i suggest you either open ur case the make and model should be printed directly on the pcb itself. or if you have the manual thats even better. otherwise you wont know if ur mb supports a gigstick.

and btw running ur pc 24/7 is like the best thing you can do for it. just like cars that can run hundreds of thousands of miles nonstop with replaced fluids. the real grind happens during startup/shutdown and everday use and abuse. this is where no name brands crackle and pop while the expensive shit takes the ass pounding with a smile on its face.

If your computer is a factory built model ( not a homemade kit ), go the company's website and find out the info.

If ge goes to crucial he won't even need that. All he'll need is the model number from the case.

Going off of memory I typed it what I'm fairly certain what I think is my model. This came up:

These 184-pin DIMM modules are compatible with your system.
These modules must be installed in pairs

1GB — CT306588 DDR PC2700 CL=2.5 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $221.99 (each)
1GB — CT306593 DDR PC3200 CL=3 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $251.99 (each)
512MB — CT306587 DDR PC2700 CL=2.5 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $88.99 (each)
512MB — CT413712 DDR PC2700 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $88.99 (each)
512MB — CT413566 DDR PC3200 CL=3 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $89.99 (each)
256MB — CT413805 DDR PC2700 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $45.99 (each)
256MB — CT413760 DDR PC3200 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $46.99 (each)
128MB — CT306589 DDR PC2700 CL=2.5 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $27.99 (each)
128MB — CT306590 DDR PC3200 CL=3 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED US $27.99 (each)

So does that mean I max out at a gig, or can I stick in two 1 gb sticks?

I'd guess you have a 2Gig limit. Since it said they must be installed in "pairs" and they offer a 1Gig stick.
