"The extent of the shortages was difficult to gauge, but the trusty old eBay-meter indicated mild shopping alarm. New PS2 consoles in the revamped design, nicknamed "PS2 Slim," were selling for as much as $230 on Tuesday, well above the $150 list price.

Availability was spotty among major online retailers. Amazon.com showed "PS2 Slim" units available only from Amazon Marketplace affiliates, who were charging as much as $350. CompUSA had units available only for in-store pick-up, with none in stock at San Francisco Bay Area or Manhattan stores. Specialty retailers GameStop and EB Games both showed all "PS2 Slim" packages as back-ordered."

I've said it before and I'll say it again - people are fucking ignorant. :oh_no:

hehe :p people are paying more for crappier playstation 2 systems. I never understood why people liked the slim one so much. I think it looks ugly.

You think Nintendo would have the only shortage since the DS is a new console, but somehow Sony manages to redesign the PS2 and come out ahead in terms of being hard to find...

That's what I was about to ask...I see them in stock everywhere I go.
Perhaps its just certain regions or something.

Well I believe the system is just about to launch in Japan so thats why maybe there is a shortage. Sony is moving more systems to this region for the launch day.

Local retailers where I live only had about 15 PS2's each.
The Best Buy I went to the Friday after Thanksgiving though, had *at least* 100 XBox's (and no one bought one :P)

I guess those idiots shopping for video games at CompUSA should check out any of the billion Target stores in the Bay Area all of which seem to have at least 10 on the shelf (and you know more in the back)

One of the managers I work with said he traded his old PS2 in at GameStop and got the slimmer version. His PS2 was doing the old 'read disc error' stuff yet he said they gave him $85 trade toward the newer version.

I haven't been to a store lately, but everytime I go to the local Wal Mart they have about 50 of them. Maybe they have less right now, but I can't imagine them being totally sold out.

I just bought one about two weeks ago. The store had a big pyramid of them. My work also bought a couple at another store. I guess it's just taking a while for people to figure out there is a new PS2 model. When I showed the new model ps2 most people were like WTF, and had no idea sony had redesigned it. Sony also just started advertising it after game commercials. That may be what is causing this "frenzy".

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, my father hosted a Thanksgiving dinner. I was trying to entertain the kids by letting them play PS2 upstairs in an empty room. A kid saw my Dreamcast (it was disconnected and sitting on the couch) and asked "Oh man! Is that the Playstation 3?!"

If that kid had money I probably would have told him yes and sold it to him for $300. As it is, I figured his parents would figure it out and not give him money to buy it.

Still makes me kind of sad... Did the Dreamcast really do that poorly? :(

PS: The kids also turned down playing Mario Sunshine. :crying: You think they would want to play something they had never played before.

I don't think the Dreamcast did much to captivate the newer generation, unfortunately.

oh another thing, it's not just that new PS2 system that's getting the price increase, that new Nintendo DS system is also listed as 'sold out' and/or 'back ordered' at most places to.. and if you check Ebay & amazon.com it's going for around $200 - $250.
both will most likely increase even more the closer it gets to x-mas

If you could've pulled that off, you'd be my new hero.

Apparently, you can't find the BIG Bulky Designed PS2 here in the Seattle area. Not even used. Same goes for the Slim Design.

You can easily find Xbox and GC anywhere you go. It seems were overrun with the Redmond Boys.

we all remember how the original ps2's launch was in short supply last time, people were paying like 700 to get them, look what they got, a shitty piece of hardware....

People never learn

I don't see why you'd want that pos but to each there own. And for the DS I've found a few here and there I wish I had the money I played metroid on it and I thought it was awesome.
