For those of you out there that have seen this flick, just wondering what your thoughts/impressions are for this one. Looks to be a nice piece of work but I thought the same thing about Sky Captain until I saw the movie.

I saw it. Really, I didn't care that much for it. Visually, it was amazing and very impressive, but it seemed to drag on and on. It seems like they were trying to do way to much within the length of the movie and it certainly shows. You may like it, but I got very bored with the plot.

Starts out wonderfully but halfway through it turns into a train wreck.

I really like it

I didn't see the original Anime, but I really loved the Visual Style and Music.

The story is so sad though... involving family ties etc.

It's the kind of beautiful film, I would like to have looping (w/no sound) all day long on my TV's... Because the visuals are so stunning.

Also it should be noted, do not buy the cheap HK bootleg of the film....

If you have the capability to watch Region 2 DVD's, you really should spring for the 3 Disc Ultimate Edition, it's really a nice package.

Does the R2 version have english subs? I'm guessing not...feel stupid for even asking. What in particular is wrong with the HK boot, other than it being a boot?

Also, I thought I heard this got picked up by a US distributor. Anyone know anythig about a possible domestic release?

BTW, Casshern will be seeing a US release through Dreamworks, for anyone who cares.

If it's anything like Dreamworks' Anime releases, which I'm sure it will be, it'll see a limited theatrical run so it can try for an Academy Award or whatever, then be on DVD within 3 months or so after that. Expect a subbed version with NO dub.

I waited this long, I'm perfectly happy to wait for that.

I'm a big fan of the original ('70s), and a moderate fan of the OAV remake ('90s), so there is big opportunity for disappointment, but I think my expectations are low enough that I should be fine.

Pass.

The visuals are BEE-fucking-UTIFUL, much better than the sepia toned, shoulda-just-been-in-black-and-white Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, but it all adds up to one big tech-demo for something better yet to come (or maybe already did with Oshii's Avalon... eh, maybe not).

Really, really gorgeous, though. You'll throw on a scene or two to impress your culturally biased friends, but you'll never subject them to the entire 2 and a half-hour running time for fear of ridicule and scorn.

I've got a nice DVD rip with english subs, plus the extra 2 discs.

Great frickin movie!!! It was bit hard to understand what the hell was going on the first time watching it. This is by far the best looking Japanese movie to date.

Overall great movie - and from an aesthetical standpoint, simply incredible, the most beautiful movie ever created.

Casshern is one of those films I really want to like... but don't.

I found myself not giving a fuck about the story, and instead was only sitting there watching in hopes for more glimpses of the beautiful visuals and incredible action sequences (the robot fight scene was crazy-good stuff.)

Overall? meh... just not for me.

On a related note, if you're a big enough fan, you should probably snag the '3-DVD Ultimate Edition.'

It's fucking beautiful.

That preview looks bad ass. I've always liked these odd futuristic/nightmarish alterverse type deals. Oshii's AVALON was freckin' cool, {not to mention I saw the brillance behind his hard-as-shit-to-watch-even-for-me films of Red Spectacles and Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cops} so I'll probably like this one. Never saw either of the Japanimation products from this line so I have no expectations about it.

This movie is terrible.

Probably the best looking movie tho.

Shouldve been 1.5 hours long with only the action scenes and none of that stuff about humans starting over that seems to plague everything that Japan puts out.

OFF-TOPIC: this thread had Zeekade and Lemonflav

ON-TOPIC: yeah, this movie was a flop in Japan too, for all of the above mentioned reasons. Too long, incomprehensible plot, and the slight whiff of pretension. Too bad, cause it's a gorgeous gorgeous film. The mute superhuman character was played by Hiroyuki Miyasako, one of my favorite comedians in one of his rare non-comedic roles.

IMO the director, Kazuaki Kiriya, does a much better job with his music videos. The videos he directed for Hikaru Utada's "Sakura Drops" and "Travelling" are just as gorgeous, with stunning visuals, but don't drag on like Casshern did.

i thought it looked amazing, and i wanted to love it, but i was disappointed by how it didn't make a whole lot of sense.

I liked it. I agree with the guy who said it started great but turned into a trainwreck halfway through. But the completely oddball ending redeemed it for me. I also kind of liked that they didn't seem to feel the slightest need to follow the plot of the original series in any meaningful way. We never did get a domestic release of this, huh?

the movie's visuals already show their age, things move fast in CG.

i didn't mind it when i first watched it a few years ago, but upon a 2nd viewing, i just turned it off.

When I watched Advent Children, I was reminded of Casshern for some reason.

probably cause it's another style-over-substance movie with a subpar plot.
