Gradius 3

Gradius 3 = best relaxation game ever!

I'm serious! One of my favorite horizontal shooters ever--keep in mind that I prefer vertical shooters in general. Many lamented the old style play and the massive slowdown back when the game launched in 1991. Thing is, that's why I love the game so much! Don't get me wrong, there are some frantic moments like the high speed tunnel section, but GIII is one of those games I could literally play forever. The pacing and weapon selection is flawless (especially the "reduce" shield option!) and the slowdown makes the game enjoyable, unlike the fucking insane arcade version. And that soundtrack...pure early 1990's joy!

This was the first SNES game I bought at the SNES launch (aside from SMB4 which came packed w/the system) and will forever remain one of my favorite 16-bit era horizontal scrollers.

Super Aleste aka Space Megaforce: Compile at their absolute prime. Far and away the best shooter on SFC.

Contra III: The Alien Wars. My personal fave Konami SNES game.

Super Ghouls N Ghosts: Amazing soundtrack, and a freakish challenge.

Super Mario World: Still the best platformer ever.

Final Fantasy II (FFIV-JPN): Not the deepest gameplay or best graphics, but a great story and a soundtrack that still gives me chills. My fave FF of all time.

I remember Venture. Is that chain even around anymore? I used to get all my games there. There was a Children's Palace right next door, they had a sweet selection of games. I believe they are gone now too.

Anyway, Super Metroid, Zelda: LttP, and Chrono Trigger are the best SNES games. Can't beat them.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts, best SNES game evar.

damn man... couldn't have said it better myself. and whilst Final Fight was slated by everyone (particularly the western press) - it is my favourite console game ever (that and ghouls and ghosts). I don't think the system pushed out anything much better than this. musically, graphically, and gameplaywise, to this day I find these games inspiring.

edit: contra and street fighter 2 must be added to that list too. the first is movie quality and never again replicated (perfect mix of arcade/console gaming - the music was amazing and the scenarios awesome) - the latter is incredible. at the time it was perfection. I wasn't even into street fighter 2 in the arcades, but this game had me at hello.

honorary mentions:TMNT, Double Dragon (super famicom - amazing little game), Gradius III, Pilot Wings, Castlevania IV, the Rushing Beat saga.
and certainly there are more.
