There is a guy selling a soul edge machine near me for 200, but he says it "may need a cap kit soon". I asked why he said that, and he said the screen "is a bit jiggly at times". I guess it bounces, perhaps? Would a cap kit fix this sort of thing, or would I have to get a new monitor all together?

The guy sells arcade machines, so I would assume he would know. Anyone want to confirm?

Yes, the caps on the monitor boards may need to be replaced if the screen's jiggly. I find that many Namco games have a similar problem for some reason. The Soul Calibur and Time Crisis games at my work had the same problems. We had a tech work on the games and ended up working on the monitor boards.

It's probably a problem with the sync. circuitry, which yes is probably because the capacitors have aged and drifted from their nominal values.

This is a common problem with monitors.

I just did a cap kit on the monitor in my Mappy cabinet yesterday. The screen would jitter and bounce before and the cap kit fixed it.

So, he is coming down to 175 for it. Looks to be in good condition outside of that. Should I get it? How much is a cap kit going to cost me?

Cap kits are usually $10-20 depending on the monitor. If you've never soldered/worked on a monitor before, you might want to get someone else to do it for you. Working on monitors can be dangerous due to the high voltage the flyback transformer produces. It needs to be discharged before replacing the caps.

You tell me: If I do the cap kit myself, is this worth $175? Should I go for it? Anyone know if I can use Sould Calibur or Soul Calibur 2 with this same machine?

opinions? Should I get this? Is it worth the price? Is the work too much for what it's worth? I wonder if I can replace the parts that are rough looking? Advice?

Okay, thanks.

I'm one of those guys that wants everything to be perfect. I just picked up my glass from the glass place just now for my Neo cab (clear glass, heh).

I want to replace as much as I can on this cab. The control panel and of course, the buttons/stick for sure. Cap kit, but that's obvious. I wonder where I can find the stuff for the control panel? You know, the underlay?

What I like about the cab..(Me)..The Red sides...I could see this become a decent Neo Geo MVS conversion cab.
I could never have enough MVS cabs....For $175.00 "I" might have done that.
I just saw a Neo Geo MVS convert made out of this same cab type-design on ebay.

As it is..I'm pretty this cab is a conversion.(what was it before)..So after buying it .it could be made into anythng though I do like the idea of keeping it a Soul Edge machine and making it mint..(Something I'd consider doing too)
Sand/paint the sides Black etc..

I'm not sure if:Sould Calibur or Soul Calibur 2 will work in this harness..but that would be cool..
I figure a Namco site may have that info.

http://www.crazykong.com/pins/Souledge.pin.txt
http://www.crazykong.com/pins/Soulcalibur.pin.txt

The Sould Calibur or Soul Calibur 2 may be able to be bought as a kit and that may include the CP overlay etc.
I'm not sure where to find that or the Soul Edge CP etc..
I remember someone here posting a link to a site once that sold several types of overlays for the Arcade Games/machines.

What I like about this cab is..If I had it,I have a few Control panels that I'm pretty sure will fit if I wanted to install the game..
Tekken 2
Victory Road with the Rotary Sticks

But then again..
I want to have cabs dedicated too:
ST-V
PGM
Taito F-3
Atomiswave

You may be able to find the overlay on eBay, if you keep an eye out for it.

Go for it, Steve! I'd buy it for $175.

Not to thread jack, but is a monitor with a screen that occasionally brightens then dims a sign of a deteriorating monitor, or is it at all related to this problem?

I'd say that's a sure sign of a upcoming Cap Kit repair.

that might fix it; you have a 50-50 shot, but for $200 , you can't go wrong.

Any suggestions on where to buy one?

Bob Roberts would be a good start
http://www.dameon.net/BBBB/caps.html

If you let me know the model of the monitor I could list the individual caps, but its not worth the trouble, get a kit and do a blanket change and have done with it- probably good for another ten years.

Reagading the main thread, for $175 the cabs a steal with or without the need of a cap kit. I must say the crt looks a little flat, but that maybe the way its set up.
Its a good looking cab.

sounds like a good deal

you might need to put some $ into it.

Be carefull, working on monitors can be dangerous.
Touching the back of one could kill you.

If in doubt, hire someone.

Seems worth the money no matter what.

Oh trust me, I don't wish to kill myself over a nice picture. I'm having the guy find someone to do the work before I take it. I hope the cap kit helps. Is it possible a cap kit won't fix the problem after all? Now I'm worried.

I would hate to have to replace the whole monitor. That would suck, and not be worth it... woudl it? :(

It is possible but highly unlikely, I would say a 90-95% chance the cap kit will fix it.

The CRT does look slow (low emission)
Edit:In the US you could probably pick one up for song.

A good example of a good and poor emission CRT is displayed this image of the twins, the one on the left (Neo) has a sharp crisp high contrast screen, the twin sister (Geo) has a flat low (slow) contrast screen.
Neo MS2- good normal emission CRT
Geo MS1- poor low emission CRT
I could rejuvenate Geos CRT but cannot really be arsed to be honest. Just live with it.
The cab you have seems to have a low emission tube, which may be easily rejuvenated or replaced. It could also be a case of poor set up but I doubt it.
I still say get the cab.
Another consideration is orientation, can the crt be rotated to acommodate vertical shmups- if so definately pick it up.

Hmmm, I see. I wonder if it can be repaired while keeping the monitor intact, or are we talking a total monitor replacement? My Neo cab has a GREAT picture. Wonder if replacing the smoked glass would help? You should see my Neo cab with clear glass. It's incredible.
