Idiotic Japanese-related question.

I've noticed on many Japanese websites that there is often some message on their front page saying something like "Sorry, this page is Japanese only."

I had thought this merely meant that the website was only written in Japanese. However, given the history of isolationism and xenophobia in Japan, could they possibly be meaning to say that their website is intended for Japanese people only?

Any clarification is appreciated.

No.

If they didn't want you to get there, you be getting a blocked message and need to use a proxy server to get in.

Do not ask me how I know this.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right to me either. I'm sure they're just apologizing for not having a translated version of the page.

japanese seem to think that their culture is individual like no other culture and that ppl incapable of speaking perfect japanese are going to create some sort of problem.

these two things seem to be the reason you see messages like that, and the connotation of the message is less "no japanese" and more "no language except japanese".

ive seen the same thing on kaillera, they are not trying to exclude non japanese rather they are trying to avoid the potential "trouble" having a member/user who doesnt speak japanese could create....

i dont think japan will truly do well in the international community until they do away with this type of attitude...

The word Japanese can be the language or the people. Probably they feel embaressed that their site is only japanese on the world wide web. Many japanese friends I know with websites really want it to be bilingual and feel bad when it isn't.

I think your reading too much into a disclaimer message. I'd only be upset if this message read "this site is FOR japanese only, foriegners get out"

But, there is massive xenophobia in japan. Sometimes it gets on my nerves, the people that make me the most angry are the people who ask the questions "do you speak japanese" and "do you have japanese friends". When I answer yes to the questions they give me this look of disbelief and distrust.

I hear they're killing themselves at an alarming rate over there. I think it's over 32K suicides since 2003.
