This guy has an unlimited supply of these, has been selling them for about six months straight.

I bought one from him about six months ago, and it works fine but there is something off about it. I figure its some sort of bootleg.
It is very light when compared to a regular Japan Mega Drive, and the control pads almost look like a "toy" version of the real thing, very plastic looking and light.

Can anyone confirm this as a bootleg - I would guess that it is, but what I am looking for is confirmation that it is. Just curious.

It's the South American version at least, the Logo is the PAL versions.

I am not sure, but I don't believe the Mega Drive Consoles came with 6 Button Control pads.

If you already have one, does the box have any copyright information on it?

And what does the AC Adapter say?

The last one i bought did. From what i can remember the Megadrive II and those
6 buttons felt really cheap and flimsy. It could be genuine.

The only megadrive's I've seen with 6-button pads new were the Mulitmega's, other than that theres alot and I mean ALOT of Brazillian systems with the 6-button pads that are new. They look a bit toy-ish and you can get them in silver and stuff like this too, but I've never seen one with a real looking box before like that, they usually look like non-sega products..

The adapter and everything states Sega Enterprises LTD, the manual lists patents in U.S Canada Hong Kong Germany Sinagapore japan France and Japan and states copyright Sega Eterprises LTD 1994.

It plays all my Jap games fine, this unit is weird, its very very light. When I first got it I though it was empty. All the buttons on the console and the pads look plastic and fake. Even though it works fine and is in better cosmetic condtion than my other Japanese Mega Drive, I won't use it.

those pads are real, they are the cheap genesis 3 6 button pads that were released after sega sold the genesis distro rights to that other company, i have them, and they do feel like a happy meal toy compared to the old ones, i don't know if the systems are boots, but the cheap feeling pads are normal.

like someone said it could be the version from south america, and the system could have been made cheaply to save money.

I bought an identical boxed one, with the same pads, at a boot sale in the UK.
It's fake! A better than average bootleg. You're right about the 'feels empty'.
I thought the most convincing part was the box, which is spot on!
I never bothered to open it to check the board, seemed obvious that it was fake.
If you want to put the discussion to bed totally, open it and look at the single uber-small board! Sega ones are thick, high quality, clearly marked etc.
I think mine is in the store room somewhere, so I can't put my hands on it easily.
I've got a couple come to think of it :spock: One came with a light gun as well, but a pistol instead of a fake menacer.
Let me know if you open it, you've got me wondering now......
