I got into KOF a month or so before KOF99 was released on the NeoGeo.
Obviously from 94-97 KOF made a hell of alot of sense, there wasnt amazingly much from the story that didnt add up each team made sense while each reason for the teams trying to stop Orochi made sense, the Hero actually did something in the previous KOFs before 99.

So as 99 approuched I was amazed with a guy called K', it must have been something about the whole science fiction thing, I just had a really good feeling about 99. So I think the NEST SAGA started really good, we had clear understandings of why people were in which teams.

Then 2000 comes and things get slighly muddled up, apart from the teams and strickers not really making much sense to me, Characters like Ron just had no value, which is ashame because as much as 2000 in my opinion is still a great kof it set 2001 up for a major flaw.

2001 comes (Probably the worst Kof ever) and things get hella mixed up, like K9999 intro as K' main bad guy (Finally K' gets a proper rival, Kula just didnt seem like a bad guy at all), and just when you think 2001 is going to lead to this great fight with K9999 going out of control and K' having to take him down,... K9999 flys away and not to even fight another day, hes just gone... and K' doesnt get to have the hero spot he deserved.
Where is Ron, what is Ron, what the hell is happening in the orochi story, the destruction of south town really seems like nothing now.

I mean the new direction kof2003 has taken seems to limit kof back to the old days which for me is great but what about all these new characters that actually have to have their stories finished or at least explained....

WHAT ABOUT RON DAMMIT!!!

MOST IMPORTANTLY WHAT ABOUT K9999 is he gone for ever

It all seems hard to wait for another saga by that time I might be dead.
But to bring them into this new saga wouldnt make much sense for K9999, while I guess we might be seeing Ron again soon.. who ever the hell he is anyway??

Wait for the Dragon Spirit.

As for K9999 she was just an overpowered spoiled brat.

Much cool and all, but he's done overall.

LOL "she", Yeah I got to agree with you very over powered and very brat like, thats why I can't see how introducing him into the current saga would work.
(We got freckles for that type of Character) I Just hate the fact there wasnt much point in really even making k9999 or even the NEST saga at times

finish 2001 with the psycho soldier team and you will see Ron. as for where he is now after all this Orochi rise mess, I have no fuckin' clue.

maybe Orochi will rise again, and no one will be able to stop him, and then suddenly Kensou awakes the Dragon Spirit to fight Orochi. yes, that may make sense. a conflict between the Orochi's (Orochi, Mukai, that new ninja girl in 2003 ending, ...etc.) and the old NESTS folks (Diana, Angel, Misty, K9999, Ron .... etc.)

let's just wait and see.

I hear that a lot, but with different characters and about KOF2001 being unbalanced. I think the only overpower character is May Lee (yes, much worse than 2003 Dou Lin)

Benimaru is powerful. Iori is powerful. Daimon is Powerful. K9999 is Powerful. Lin is Powerful. Foxy is powerful. K' is powerful (my favourite version), Haidern is Powerful.

so which one of them is really overpowered. I think non. that's why I like 2001. you have to stay sharp all the time and focus.

Many other characters were left out in 2003, like Choi, Andy, Chin and Kensou.

And Malin took the "your-girl-wearing-relatively-casual-clothes-who-plays-different-from-any-other-chara" title this year.

No, no KOF chara was ever as overpowered as the godlike Duolon.

If you disagree it is because you have not played as much, or you don't play against truly competitive opponents.

Not really that overpowered, just cheap and easy to use.

hmm you may be right on that. but ..... I may have a chance to beat Doulin in a 1 vs 1 match (using a different character from Dou), but in 2001, the chances of beating May Lee using 1 character (different from May Lee) are 0% !!

that's if both sides play well.

As well as in the Benimaru team's ending in 2000 (I love that one). Lin is after Ron for betraying their ninja clan. Duolon also has some connection to Ron in '03. As has been pointed out many times, 'Ron' can also be interpreted or spelled as 'Lon', which may relate to the connection to Duolon.

If you read all the team stories, which are now all on the 10th Anniversary site, it will make more sense. Unfortunately, we don't get a lot of the story stuff here that gets printed in magazines, etc. in Japan. Too many people who say "OMFG who cares about story it only matter how game play!!! If I want read I read a book (I'm guessing that reading a book is a purely hypothetical situation for some of these people anyway)." For some reason, they think they have to make a choice of either gameplay OR story. Even recent US guidebooks like SF Anniversary Collection or SVC for Xbox don't contain the slightest information on who the characters are, why they fight, etc. On the other hand, look at the illustrations in the Neo Geo Freak (the real Japanese magazine, not the US hack co.) KOF 2000 mook that were originally printed with team stories and info. That kind of stuff just makes the game richer and I wish we got it here.

And as for '01 being the worst KOF...no way. For me, it's the second or third best of the series. It just doesn't look all that great. Gameplay-wise, the title of 'worst' goes to '99, imo.

For me personally KOF2k1 just wasnt kof.
I must admit maybe if I were a better KOF player at 2k1 I could judge it more throughly, but as soon as I try to play it for real it just bores me.
I dont know what it is apart from perhaps the worst music, art and how it seems very rushed compared to other kof games before that time; but game play wise I dont really feel the rush of battle from it, it just doesnt do anything for me at all.

KOF2001 is good for beginners. I know I sound like KOF-expert wannabe when I say this, but you can link all command moves (forward A or B) with close C. I'm no where a KOF expert. I just like to get people into the game. try these combos in 2001 and let me know what you think:

Benimaru: (2 power stocks)

close C .... forward B ..... qcb A ...[cancel]... qcf x2 A

Iori: (3 power stocks):

close C .... forward B ..... qcb C ..... dragon punch C

...[cancel]... qcf hcb A ..... qcf x4 A+C

dude, a matter-of-fact observation isn't exactly justification for bumping a 1+ year old thread
