first up lets get some things straight. im not biased either towards or against this game. i am keen for something to play though seeing as i have given up on neowave so this game is the next big thing for me.
secondly i compare this game as a piece of creative work to cvs2 the most. not to nbc or sfalpha, etc.
thirdly i try to be as fair as possible. no point in a report on something if its just a rant of fanboy/antifanboy opinion imo.
ok, no noticeable changes from the last loke test i went to, not on an aesthetic level at least though moves/damage/system, etc may have received tweaking. all supers are in (demitris midnight bliss and ingrid and muks level threes are in). there was about 40 ppl trying to play on 4 back to back sets at monte carlo so i had no way of checking out the final bosses etc today.
ok graphics first, well a fighting game is like a girl ive been finding recently at first the looks (graphics) matter but after a week or two its all about the personality (gameplay). at this point i will say though that COMPARED TO CVS2 as a piece of creative work its shit (read 3 or 4 out of ten for effort). sprites look almost exactly like their counterparts from whichever game they come from. see leo side by side with ryu and youll notice the different shading and outlining styles. leo against zangief or demitri and the pixellation of the latter two look even worse against a smoother leo. coloring is different as is shading and the like. yeah thats just graphics though so it wont mean shit in a month or so but its sad to see such a lack of effort considering how long ago capcom released their last fighter (no thats not a comparison to anything snk has/is doing).
bgs are a very mixed bag but i will say this, they are either completely devoid of life (inside the warped castle or the beautiful sunset through ruins stage) or just plain pathetically animated (like the city street one with ken who turns his head every 5 seconds, the jungle one with a shark or something in the water behind the foliage or the cambodia looking one with dhalsims silly looking shadow and adons three frame practicing sequence). again it reeks of "cant be bothered". yeah the ruins one is beautiful but its not near enough to make me feel like this game took effort.
ok now gameplay, the meat and potatoes of a fighting game. well balance, system quality is impossible to say at this point (of course) and its gonna take months for the cheese or quality to shine (unless its as badly broken as svc which is of course highly unlikely) but the lake of evasive/defensive options seem to make this a very old school street fighter style game, in other words i foresee fireball traps, relying on strong normal aa's (like leo's c.HP) and the like being a staple of this game, again its too early to really tell though so i could be completely wrong, indeed felicia seemed to have a solid rush down game.
speed is slower than the current norm, considerably slower than cvs2 and prolly slower than alpha3, more like standard setting on alpha 2 id say. nool is like a balloon when he jumps, just asking to get hit.
character trends were as follows, lots of ryus, leos (surprising), karins, and ingrids. quite a few giefs, alexs, guiles and demitris. a few felicias, muks and yuns.
surprise character award goes to leo, wow, he is a poking king it would seem. fast recovery 3/4 screen crouching MP (i think) is great and used a lot. he jumps and can smack you with a (i think) j.HP from a mile away making mistimed fbs or aa's easily punishable. he seems to be able to level up and in doing so heal himself in game. he can be played a little like gief with his command throw and his super command throw does somewhere between half a bar and 2/3 or a bar (ouch). he was getting lots of use and lots of wins.
mukuro seems a little weak as does nool.
guile, ryu, karin and leo as i said seem strong.
well thats about it for now, im sure ill expand on these impressions as i play more as will others i am sure

only time will tell?
) The game is nice. Everything has this light pastel feel to it. It's very polished and the art is fantastic.
