if you are looking for Japanese stuff (ie. music) get WinMX

For me, the best P2P for new releases is bittorrent (few files available but very fast), while if you are looking for older stuff I just use emule (slower, but you can find virtually anything, easy to search)

For bittorrent client, I use ABC:

http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/

You need to download a .torrent small file (less than 100 kb) for the archive you want to download. You can find them in many pages, the most famous one being www.suprnova.org . Then you load this torrent file into your client and after that it basically works alone.

just as Amano Jacu said:
for bittorrent you can't search for files like with other P2P software.
instead you have to dl a small .torrent file and open it with a bittorrent
client of your choice (ie. Azureus or ABC).
this file has all the information the client needs to dl the corresponding file.
(ie. music album, movie, etc)
these files can be found all across the net.
just google a bit.
btw the link Amon Jacu posted is a good starting point. ;)
bittorrent is especially good if you are looking for larger files.
I use it to get anime fansubs.

if you want to learn more about bittorrent follow this link

[edit] small correction

If you're looking for music, Soulseek is what you want. There's more than music on there, but it really is the meat of what is shared. The thing that makes this program better than any other music sharing program (or just P2P software in general) is that you can search through users' shared folders. An invaluable tool in finding obscure and new music.

Warez and such, yeah, Bitorrent. User interaction with it blows though from my experience. It does work well, I just don't like how it works.

Another alternative which probably isn't too widely known is Hotline. It uses trackers like Bitorrent, but it tracks servers and the files on them, not users. So it's basically like a searchable network of FTPs with more features. Only problem is, you have to have an in, so to say. Public servers usually require uploading while downloading and/or are just plain slow, but private servers expect good uploads or money for an account. Barring that aspect of it, it's an excellent program for getting anything you want.
