I picked Monster Hunter for the PS2 up a few days ago, and despite the rather lukewarm reception it received, I am highly impressed. The game plays very well, has a nice aesthetic, and it focuses nicely on one feature: hunting and killing monsters. For those of you who haven't played it or heard anything about it, imagine Phantasy Star Online melded with a bit of Final Fantasy XI, and voila! You've got Monster Hunter.

I think it's really disappointing that most reviewers of this game don't quite "get it"; I hate to use that phrase, but it's true. The game is meant to be played online, plain and simple. There are more quests and better quests online, and you will have a much easier time playing with other people instead of hoofing it solo. Also, the high concept of the game shines when you're online playing with others and devising traps and attacks to take down huge Wyverns that a single player would have little hope of taking down himself. Most of the reviews I have read reviewed the game based on its offline content, which, admittedly, is a bit limited, but I think that's to be expected for a game that focuses on online cooperative play. Strangely enough, I think that one of the best reviews I have read of this game was a user review from GameFAQs. I think he gave it a 6/10, so if you want to read it, you'll know which one to look for.

Anyway, to end this little rant, I was just curious if anyone on the NG.com forums here has this game and if they are playing it online. I wouldn't mind setting up some games for the members of this board, since it would be a bit more interesting to play with people you might have further contact with outside of just the game. So, post here if you are playing the game and if you would be down to get some hunting going online. :D

Wow, no one? Perhaps I should be posting this in the Online Gaming board, instead of Unrelated Topics. However, there is plenty to talk about in this game, not just setting up meetings.

I finally got to the point where I can go join groups that hunt down the dragons. The only dragon I have killed so far is a Yian Kut-Ku, a small pink creature that's reminiscent of a chicken. The battles get pretty intense, though, and teamwork is definitely the key to winning. I couldn't recommend this title enough, quite frankly. It's a refreshing change of pace from pretentious MMORPG-style online games (like FFXI), and slightly more advanced than the classic PSO.

I was thinking about picking this game up, but I would also have to get the broadband adaptor... So I got Burnout 3 instead. I may still get it in the future though.
