taking sample as the preferred scare factor format for the horror/survival game genre...

for the horror and survival VG buffs out there, what kind of scare would you prefer? psychological (SILENT HILL series) or terror-busting (BIOHAZARD series).

would like to see preference and reasons why SILENT HILL or BIOHAZARD is best in the survival horror platform... :spock: :spock:

I think each game offers something unique that makes them both enjoyable. For me, each one offers something that keeps me clued to my controller and makes me want to play further and further. I guess to each their own.

RE is just an awesome series
but
SH is also

I think that Silent Hill is scarier 2,3 have there share of horrible area's and 4's ghost PISS ME OFF!

With RE I think it is more action packed and you feel rewarded for a job well done.

I think Siren is freakier then both of them though

Silent Hill.

BioHazard games are good, but their concept of "horror" is laughable. This games will make you nervous, but because of the lack of HP and ammo, while you will never find anything disturbing in them. Also, fighting the undead (or whatever) being a fully trained STARS member is not as risky as fighting them only being a simple civilian.

The REmake's atmosphere is as creepy as any SH game, IMO. RE's problem is that they have milked the series to much. Judging by the demo though, RE4 will be one of the best survival horror games ever.

I'll say first Silent Hill (PSOne) and Resident Evil Remake (GC) are excellent.

For RE1 on GCN alone I give it to Resident Evil. Silent Hill was okay, but I never cared for it after playing RE (well, RE came first... and that's been my fav ever since).

Not that SH sucks. But RE1 on GCN has such an incredible atmosphere.

I bought the GameCube BioHazard when it was released and loved it, the atmosphere is great, but the enemies are still... boring and not really disturbing or "special" as those found in Silent Hill.

Don't get me wrong, I love the BioHazard series and I am really looking forwad to BioHazard4, but the experience that the Silent Hill series offers cannot be matched. At least not by BioHazard.

I agree. The GC biohazard games are incredible. SO SCARY. I played silent hill 1 a long time ago when it came out. I really enjoyed it and it scared the shit out of me. Especially the school. But overall, I think Biohazard has a better story and the characters are more interesting.

Silent Hill

The Silent Hill Universe is populated by GRITTY realism, in the town and all of the environments, this is starkly contrasted by the deeply disturbing Enemies, and imagery presented to you, through a finely woven yet purposeully confusing story.

Resident Evil has more to do with the action side, shoot the zombies, with 5HP left and only 4 revolver bullets, make it to the next room, find ammo, swap weapons, get health, find key, unlock door, fight bigger zombie....Repeat.

You can simplify any game and make it sound boring.

Silent Hill: Run through normal but scary area, beat up vibrating enemies with a pipe, solve a puzzle involving coins or keys somehow, go to dark alternate area, fight vibrating enemies, solve puzzle involving coins or keys. Repeat.

Voted for silent hill, in a horror game atmosphere is vital, and the silent hills are one of the most stylish games around. Whereas biohazards` seem more cartoony, and the moaning zombies are more comical than scary.

Exactly what I thought.
I never really thought RE/BH was meant to be scary... I always thought it was just a zombie-blasting game with chicks.

I love both series, but I find Biohazard much more visceral. Something about running around shooting zombies is kind of stress releiving. In Silent Hill, I felt like I didn't even want to stop to kill creatures, becaue it was a real chore. But Silent Hill gets under your skin more.

I like both series a lot, but out of all instalments of each, Silent Hill 2 had the best story, IMO. RE1 and SH1 had the best structure and pacing.

Really, it comes down to how you like your 'horror'. RE lost a lot of its punch when you get the definitive answer of what's causing everything at the end of part 1 (although the title 'Biohazard' is a bit of a clue). One of the things that made Night of the Living Dead so effective when you first see it is that there's no real explanation...military chemecal spill?...aliens?...judgement from God?... Once you label it, it becomes a lot less horrifying...becomes just a situation you have to deal with. Code Veronica was a (bad) joke. I got bored of RE0 halfway through; controling 2 people is counter-immersive. Pulls me out of the moment. One of the great things about the original is not knowing who you can trust. You can't be sure who's side Barry is on until the end.

On the other hand, I don't think SH 3 & 4 are anywhere near as good as the first 2.

My ranking: SH2 and 1>RE1>RE2>RE3>SH3>SH4 and RE0>episode of Scooby Doo>Code Veronica

Well, I don't think I really need to tell you guys which one I go for.

Silent Hill has a naturalistic and human ability to shake those elements of the human heart that are applicable to everyone: Death, Sex, Love and uncertianty. Silent Hill goes beyond it's imaculate artistic visuals, it's stirring audio, and it's stoic presentaton. It strums a chord inside the human mind that makes our emotions move, and question our concepts of reason.

Truly art in motion, the Silent Hill series is beyond a game" It is an experience.

I agree even silent hill adheres to a pretty much specific formula.. but to me its not as tedious as RE...

and Silent Hill is Still a superior Series in my personal opinion.

It looks like Silent Hill is winning by 2 votes... (10 - 12)

Geez, some of you guys are hillarious. You can like better whichever you want, but I wouldn't call either of them 'tedious'. It's like the Capcom/SNK thing...in order to like one, the other has to suck? Shit.

voted Resident Evil, always preferred the action approach and have enjoyed every story-based title in the series. (this excludes the god-awful gun games, outbreak et.al) I absolutely loves Silent Hill 2, but SH3 just didn't grip me in anyway and i havent bothered with SH4 because of all the bad press and theose ghosts just sound annoying, I'll give it a try when it goes cheap.

Ont the other hand, RE4 looks absolutely awesome and shows true innovation and a real up in ante in atmosphere.

If you would have asked me around the time of games like Nemesis and Code Veronica I would have said Silent Hill. But the last few Silent Hill games have become as standard as the Resident Evil games before them. I've just grown acustom to them and don't find them freaky anymore, I find some enemies simply laughable by how ridiculous they look. When RE hit the Gamecube with the remake I was floored. It was everything I loved about Resident Evil glorified. But in the end, it was still Resident Evil and I still wasn't terribly freaked out by to many things. On the other hand, where Silent Hill looks to continue following the same stuff as before, RE4 is certainly a refreshing breath and creeps me the hell out. It reminds me so much of those classic horror films mixed with a more modern rugged action influence. Creepy European villages with old styled gothic churches is a nice touch, big mutated fish thing boss is certainly Resident Evil in style. So I have to go with RE, it's just really stepped up to the plate as a series lately. Where as Silent Hill is starting to go through the more bland stage that RE already experienced.
