Pain killers?

I have an infected crown, which has swollen the left side of my jaw, and caused me some of the worst pain of my life. My dentist hasn't been able to fit me in, and won't be able to until tomorrow. So he prescribed me Tylenol 3 (with codeine), which sort of did the job for a few days. Now it's almost like taking nothing, in fact I had to double up and take two at a time to get any results.

So since I have to wait another day to see him, he's prescribed me Vicodin. Anyone ever taken this? I don't have a lot of experience with pain meds, I've only ever taken Percocet once when I had my wisdom teeth removed. Is Vicodin seriously going to fuck me up? What is everyone's personal favorite prescription pain killer?

Any strong codeine based painkiller, could offer other advice but it may be considered irresponsible.
It depends on how friendly your pharmacist is.

I took some vicodin for cellulitis, and it fixed me up.

I too was in some of the worst pain in my life and the vicodin worked like a charm.

Codeine is so weak I can't beleive it's still a controlled substance, and I sure as hell can't beleive it's still prescribed for anything other than minor aches anymore. Vicodin is a bit stronger than tylenol 3, and 1-2 every 4-6 hours should be enough to kill most moderate pains.

Hahahahahaha. Yeah, Vicodin is good people.

I was "prescribed" Vicodin to clear up a little problem I had with boredom, and I continue to take it occasionally to help completely resolve the problem.

PS: When your painkillers start affecting you less and less it's time to up the frequency between consumed doses and "injest" the pills thorugh your nose (that's what it's there for stupid.)

Heh. Snorting vicodin. Good one. You do realize they each weigh about 1gram each, and the active "fun" ingrediant in there is only 5miligrams? The tylenol would irritate your sinuses and your body would wash it away via mucus before any of that got absorbed.

If you have a large supply of vicodin, and you're serious about having a good time with em, well, erm, never mind :smirk:

I had percocet for my wisdom teeth in July.
Gave me a little high for about 10 minutes tops...no big deal.
Zomig [a migraine medication], which I take a few times a month at least, sure makes me feel prettier.

Oxycontin, which I moved to after the percocet for another surgery, is king.
Made me feel like a billion dollars. High lasted about an hour. But I almost overdosed. And the withdrawal symptoms were killer. I'd stay away if I were you...but I doubt you'd get that strong of a pain killer prescribed anyways.

I just picked up my new meds, and it says Hydrocodone on the label. I assume that's just another name for Vicodin. I took one an hour ago, coupled with 3 Advil for anti-inflammatory properties, and I have just started feeling mellow. The thing I hate about these pain meds is that it feels like I'm in a fog, I can't really think straight. Anything is better than the jaw pain though..

Vicodin, BAH!, fuck that shit. Yeah, cause I just love the nausia, vomiting and potential migrane inducing hangovers that they could cause. Sign me up

Perkaset is my drug of choice. That shit will do you up right.

Be careful peeps. Painkillers can be wildly addictive. Even the most well-meaning, otherwise 100% legit folks have struggled with getting off them. I'd just stick with whatever just barely manages to get you over the pain hump.

I like the phrase 'pain hump'.

Yeah, I do worry about addiction. I'm only taking these as long as the pain is unbearable. Hopefully I'll have a productive dental visit tomorrow and I won't need these anymore. He only prescribed me 16 pills anyway, just enough for 4-5 days.

You know the other downside to these types of painkillers? Constipation.. I haven't had to do a number two for over three days now, which kind of sucks. Then again, I haven't been eating much anyway. This has been the worst week of my life..

i have a bum tooth as well and can't get into the dentist until tomorrow...my sis gave me 3 Vicodins, but I've been a puss and haven't tried one yet...I don't like nausea or vomiting...so the fear of that side effect has made me suffer through the pain, which at times has had me nearly in tears.

I feel like a million dollars right now. No side effects whatsoever, but then everyone reacts to these drugs differently. I can honestly say I would prefer nausea to this tooth pain.

Uh, the strongest thing I had in the last year, aside from some knockout gas for my teeth, was alternation between 4 advil and 2 tylenol every two hours. How lame.

I can feel ya', last thursday I had 5 teeth extracted. Good news is, your mouth heals quick, so more than likely in 2-3 days the pain will probably be to the point regular advil can knock it out.

I wouldn't worry about addiction if you only have 4-5 days worth. Just remember, you have them to control pain, not get high.

On a stray note, that night after having my surgery I popped 2 vicodin and 1mg. of xanax. My couch never felt so good. :D

Vicadin is your friend. Shit will make you feel good, I have some for my absessed molar (which I still havent gotten a root canal for.......).

It works even better if you arent in any pain. Thats a little different though.

Hydrocodone is a form of codeine. Just slight chemical modification.

It's funny. Being a chemist myself, I hate taking prescription drugs. I know what they do to people (read about Vioxx which just shit the bed for more info).

I also have a very high tolerance for pain and painkillers don't do anything for me anyways. Had 2 wisdom teeth pulled, no pain killers afterwards. Had nerve surgery on my right thumb and took Vicodin for about 1 day and decided I could live with the constant buzzing in the hand.

Painkillers are for sissies.
