wow, i need a cigarette after that.

my initial reaction was that the first hour was great at keeping you in suspense, then it kind of fell apart in a mess of sub-plots that seemingly go nowhere and seem to have no bearing on the first part of the movie at all, but as the dessret song at the end implies, it's a jigsaw puzzle. once you start threading all the little sub-plots together as they relate to pop-culture and it's effect on society, the movie goes from stylized bloodbath to something truly amazing. glad i decided to pick this up at total random when i saw it on the rack at best buy today. :D anyone else seen it?

I rented this a couple of months ago. Really disturbing but unique to American eyes.

Just the first couple of minutes was shocking. It was the same feeling after watching, "Versus," the first 2 seconds.

"Everyone let's jump onto the Subway tracks. Ready? On my mark. 1, 2, 3... Go!"

You had students jumping off school buildings as well.

A total Bloodbath.

I can't believe my Blockbuster was carrying this film. Especially, in the kids family section.

Only joking.

dunno, the skin roll (along with how it was made later on) and kitchen scene were way worse, IMO. ;)

It's an interesting movie, but it falls apart under close scrutiny. The plot makes little to no sense, and it just serves as a device to show us scenes of extreme violence and gore. It's not the worst movie I have ever seen, but it's definitely the movie that people tend to make it out to be.

this is what i thought at first as well, but after closer scrutiny, i found a lot more there than i initially thought, which just off the top of my head, would take pages to detail.

but even then, there are still some small continuity holes, the tone of the movie is definitely not consistent in the beginning (psychologial thriller mystery, or black comedy?), and things that just don't need attention paid to them (i.e. the guard confronting the ghosts of the the two nurses) are paid attention to...

to each their own, its definitely a movie that some won't come away with anything from, as i almost dismissed it as "meh" myself, but the more i step away from it, and dissect it, the more fascinating i find it. definitely going to have to watch it again soon.

The movie was really messed up but I kind of enjoyed it. I was rather disappointed with the ending though. But most Japanese horror movies have really wierd or abrupt endings so I got used to it by now.

I paid $50 CDN for the DVD and was dissapointed at first. However, it started to grow on me after reading some of the message boards on www.kfccinema.com/temple . Like most of Japanese cinema, I find that the films are not easily accessbility and require heavy analyzation and multiple viewings to gain greater meaning.

Like I said, I thought it was a decent movie blown totally out of proportion by "hype" on the intarweb. I have spent decent periods of time in Japan, and I have been studying Japanese for about six years in and out of a classroom setting. I think that I would have a better understanding of Japanese culture than most people, but I would argue that that isn't necessarily needed to understand Suicide Club. Why? Because it's just meant to be strange. The director (his name eludes me at this point) even said something to that effect in interviews about the movie. Take it for what it is and I think that you will get the most out of your viewing experience.

All that said, my favorite part of the movie was when you got to hear the song "Suicide Kiss" by Rolly. I managed to find the OST of the movie, so I am a happy camper. :D

While I'm one of the bigger film buffs and I did pick up the film sometime ago, I only watched teh first 25 minutes of it and turned it off. I've seen films by GAIRA, and Shinya Tsukamoto that make more sense. Maybe I'll give it another shot but I was dissapointed in what little bit I did see of it in May of 2003.
