Pitof Directing Live-Action Akira?

Source: Telerama
September 29, 2004

In an interview with Telerama about the new "Steamboat" theatrical movie, Akira creator Katsushiro Otomo mentions that Catwoman director Pitof will be helming the big screen version.

The live-action Akira is about a biker gang who must stop a buddy from using the superhuman powers he acquired from a government experiment.

Stephen Norrington was previously attached to direct the movie

Strike two is that being american made, it will be Hollywoodized into a unwatchable piece of garbage.

The fact that it's live action is a foul tip.

At least this one isn't being threatened to be turned into a musical by freaking Tim Burton. By the way, how credible is a story that mentions Otomo's movie, "Steamboat"?

norrington would have been ace, blade was a great movie.

catwomen sucked floppy donkey balls, strike one, making akira into live action is strike 2 (about as smart as the DBZ movie), seriously a BAD idea. there is no way they could even do the akira movie justice unless it had like a 100-200 million budget (and that would never happen), that story and the shit that goes on in the anime is just fucking too huge for live action. look what happened with the fist of the northstar live action on a shoestring budget.... nuff said.

Well to be fair if you compare the anime akira to the manga books, then the anime sucks hard. I would go so far as to say that the anime is almost nothing like the original mangas. So a hollywood movie based on the anime isnt going to be to spectacular either.

I'm not much of a fan of the animated movie either, but at least it was written and directed by the original creator. The differences between them are kind of acceptable since the movie ends the way he originally intended the comic to end (before he decided to drag it out a few extra years).

Pitof did pretty well with "Vidocq" and "Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatre". For some reason, I just think French directors and hollywood don't mix very well.

If there's one person who can handle putting a live-action "Akira" together, it's Pitof. Before you flood me with Catwoman denotations, see "Vidocq" and look into his past visual effects work. (Nevertheless; live action "Akira", made in Hollywood? Hahaha.)

this will be as good as the TV remake of the shining, where they explained every detail of the plot before hand, as not to confuse or alarm anyone...

but more than anything, i can just se this being a bad CG-fest... :(

Is it really going to be that bad just because it's going to be live-action? The animated one was just brilliant; the live-action one won't be that bad, will it?

Way off topic, but... even as brilliant as Kubrick was, in a lot of ways the TV remake was much closer to the original novel. It wasn't all bad.

Never mind animated versus live action...I just don't understand why Hollywood insists on making US remakes (that always end up crap) of good foreign movies. La Femme Nikita, Ring, etc. Even if they managed to do a good job on one...what's the point?! Just put the real movie in the theatre.

Off topic as well :make_fac:
yeah from what I heard steven king wasnt very thrilled with kubrik's work on the shining. I think I remember him saying that he was disappointed that kubrik didnt touch enough on the fact that the father was an alcoholic. Somthing that the tv version did. But the ending on the tv version was really gay :loco:

That fits, because Stephen King's books all end gay. He's written maybe 2 short stories in his whole life that he didn't fuck up with lame endings.

jesus, love your taste in women steph.
are you a fan of jean seberg too?

anyways, yes, the original animated movie wasn't 1/10th of the manga.
though it was an entity to itself, which was why it's still referred to as a landmark
as well as gateway film.
I don't have high hopes for this, but I'm sure it'll be something.
