Help with a dodgy AES cart

I've got an AES cartridge that won't work at all, it just displays garbled muck then goes to a blue screen, there's no sound either.

I opened it up to have a look at the boards and clean them etc. I cleaned the contacts thoroughly as well, but no joy. It looks as if one of the boards may be the wrong way round, is there a way to tell which way round they should go?

Both boards should have the chips facing up, and I thought they'd only fit one way in though. I believe for AES the chips go toward the cart sticker.

I opened another cartridge to make sure. Both boards should have the chips facing away from the sticker.

At least I know that they are facing the right way now.

The game still doesn't work though, just garbled color sequence then blue. Which seems the same as when you turn the power on with no cart in the slot!

Could the fact that one of baords was initially facing the wrong way have damaged the cartridge in some way?

Also the boards seem to have sticky crap all over them, is it worth trying to clean this off, or has this cartridge seen it's day?

Thanks.

What are you using to clean the carts connections..?
Are they bright and shiny after cleaning...they have to be super clean..

I only use Contact cleaner..to get the residue/dirt off after I clean MVS cart connectors using (dry) Green Scotch Brite.
I used this method today on 4 carts..Contact cleaner just doesn't get the yellow off...(at least for me)

Is the sticky crap hardened/brown...?
If it's wet..or moist then it could be soda...If it comes off by wiping it off easily then take it off...
.If it's hardened/brown.....& it's not on the connectors then leave it there.

Pull the cart out of the AES a bit and see what happens.

Do you have other games that work real well..in the AES.

Thanks for the help chris1.

I'm pretty sure the contacts are clean at this stage.

I'm using alcohol (white spirits) to clean the boards. The sticky stuff on the boards is transparent and really stubborn. I even tried getting it off with a toothbrush dipped in alcohol, but it simply won't budge.

Do you think that this stuff is stopping the cart from working? Or could it be that something on the board is shot?

I'd leave that stuff on..

It's a sealer or some sort of flux residue that's sometimes found on carts..
It's meant to be there.

I forhet what's it actually is called but this stuff has been talked about before here...I just can't find the threads..

You might have a bad solder spot or broken trace on the boards..

What game is it..?

I'd say to let someone try it..maybe near you...in their system
Or maybe a member here can repair it/check it out... like Kenny or Jeff Kurtz ..

The game is Sengoku 2.

I've got loads of AES games and I've never had one that wouldn't load at all. I tried this cart on two different consoles, even moving around the cartridge in the slots.

I think the only solution might be to send it to someone. It's not a valuable game, but I was looking forward to trying it out...

Maybe I'll send Kenny a PM.

did you try pulling the cart up a little. I have this same problem sometimes with the blue screen, but tha method usually fixes it.

usually when you get the blue it means the carts not making good contact. where did you get this cart from?

I've cleaned the contacts within an inch of they're life so I can't see why they wouldn't be making contact. Perhaps part of the board is fried, and the console interprets this as no cartridge being present.

I got the game loose of Ebay.
