Hello,

I have a spare VGA monitor knocking about and was wondering if you can connect a NeoGeo AES to this with a little help from an adaptor or something?

Regards,

I'm actually looking into this for a project right now...

Aside from making your own board, I've seen 2 possible configurations for RGB to VGA/XGA that's optimized for video games. If anyone has recommendations on making either of these configurations better I'd love to hear!

Config 1
Attach Neo-Geo FCG-9 RGB cable to Micomsoft XRGB2-Plus, then VGA/XGA out to your monitor.

Config 2
Attach Micomsoft XNEO-1 to Neo-Geo, attach a DB15 to VGA adapter to XNEO-1 for VGA.

The first config seems to be a better choice since it will scale to XGA (1024x768) whereas the XNEO-1 only scales to VGA (640x480). I'm hoping to run some samples of the XNEO-1 vs. XRGB2-Plus at VGA resolution as soon as my AES gets back from repair.

The eventual goal for my project is to put a VGA connector on a consolized MVS board. Buying pre-made products like the Micomsoft stuff can save time prototyping a board, but finding an XNEO-1 can be a little hard these days. The XRGB2-Plus can be found at many import game stores.

As far as I knew the XNEO-1 didn't upscan so you wouldn't have a high enough scan rate for most multiscan monitors.

I've got one around here but I've never tried it.

I haven't been able to find any specifications on the video out for the XNEO-1, but I think it will output 640x480 (VGA) but defiinitely not XGA.

The connector is DB15 (which is used in older Apple monitors) so I was going to look around for some different DB15 to VGA adapters and see if I could get any of them to work.

Hopefully when my AES is back from being repaired I can hook up a XNEO-1 and see the quality of the signal from the DB15 connector.

I can't translate it but I can see that it's telling you that it outputs a horizontal scan rate of 15kHz and most VGA monitors can't sync on anything lower than about 30kHz.

This is the whole premise behind the upscan converters (of which the XNEO-1 isn't).

But an XNEO-1 will give you a really good s-video picture.

I guess maybe the whole situation didn't get clearly nailed in a single post. Basically the purpose of the XNEO-1 is to provide excellent S-Video output as Spike stated.

The XRGB-2 and 2 Plus are designed to upscan the console RGB signals to VGA scan rates for our PC monitors. They provide output with or without scanlines, though IMHO the scanlines look best with the NEO and most other consoles I tried (Saturn).

Also, there's the XAV-2s which is basically the box you need to duplicate the XNEO-1 functions for all other consoles with RGB output. Finally, the XSelect-D4 is kinda like a XRGB-2 but it supports 480p and 720p signals from newer consoles.

I have all of these and keep intending to do a quality comparison with the XNEO-1 and the XAV-2s but I haven't gotten it done. I'm curious if they are the same hardware, essentially or if one has superior output for the Neo.
