I'm just annoyed it won't happen until 2009.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Jay Leno will hand over the reins of NBC's "The Tonight Show" to "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien -- but not until 2009, the network announced Monday.

"In 2009, I'll be 59 years old and will have had this dream job for 17 years," Leno said in NBC's written statement. "I felt that the timing was right to plan for my successor and there is no one more qualified than Conan."

"Plus, I promised Mavis (his wife) I would take her out for dinner before I turned 60," Leno said.

O'Brien, 41, has signed a contract to stay in his current job at 12:30 a.m. ET for the next five years and then take over the top-rated late-night show when Leno retires.

"Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien continue to be the most successful combination in all of late night," said NBC senior vice president Rick Ludwin. "We have locked in the future ... for years to come."

It's not clear just how long O'Brien is "locked in." NBC would not say how long his new contract lasts, nor how much he and Leno are to be paid.

The early announcement avoids a replay of the early 1990s, when the retirement of veteran host Johnny Carson touched off a behind-the-scenes battle between Leno and then- "Late Night" host David Letterman over who would be Carson's successor.

That feud ended with Letterman going to CBS to compete head-to-head with Leno. Letterman took an early lead in the ratings, but Leno has been consistently ahead for the last nine years.

O'Brien, in the statement, called "The Tonight Show" "one of the great franchises in television" and said he is "thrilled to get this opportunity."

"I am thankful to everyone at NBC -- which has been my home for the last 11 years -- and I am particularly grateful to Jay for all the generous support and kindness he has always shown me," he said.

The announcement leaves an upcoming vacancy in the 12:30 a.m. time slot, a position that catapulted both Letterman and O'Brien onto TV's lucrative A-list.

Leno, a stand-up comic, was Carson's guest host before taking over full-time. O'Brien was a writer for "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons" before landing the "Late Night" job in 1993.

I wonder if Kevin Eubanks and his crew will stay on for The Tonight Show, or will Conan bring along Max Weinberg & the Weinberg 7? Personally I can't stand Conan's musical home talent.

They've been playing The Late Shift ad nauseum on HBO this month, so the timing of this announcement is appropriate. Conan should pencil in some time to write The Simpsons movie.

I can't wait.

Leno is the most unfunny, massive-chinned bore that ever roamed TV.
Only Wal-Martians think he's funny.

Conan is so much funnier...thank God he's taking over.

Well maybe he and Pat Morita will film Collision Course 2 in 2009 with special guest apperance by Ralph Machio or something. He's not as funny as Conan, true... but he's not that bad either. Personally I want Stinky Dinkins to get his own late night show that be the shit.

Leno puts me to sleep.

They should just boot him off and give his job to "Little Jay Leno" instead.

Having "Little Leno" and then Conan (still on his show) back-to-back would rock.

Plus, Max Weinberg and the Weinberg 7 own.

Conan definitely owns Leno in the original humor department, but nothing makes me hornier than Leno's boulder-chiseling Gorilla-chin ... :emb:

Indeed, it's good to see. I love Conan. He has a unique humor about him and it will be interesting to see a different audience see the masturbating bear for the first time.

Conan hasn't been the same since Andy Richter left. Sometimes, he seems like he's almost struggling to get laughs.

this is gonna suck for hardcore fans of the current conan stuff, he won't be able to do half the shit he does now in that earlier timeslot, it's gonna get dumbed down just like leno's show is, remember when conan did his prime time specials after friends? they sucked.

if conan doesn't take max and the band the show will be dead.

and yeah conan OWNED when andy was there, hasn't been the same since. i wish those old eps were on DVD.

Fully agreed on all of this.

No way we'll be seeing the Masturbating Bear any more :( then again, TV does keep getting raunchier it seems, so anything's possible...

I thought the same thing when I read this story. Even though Leno is on pretty late, he is still way more "mainstream" than Conan ever has been. But still, I say good for Conan. If anyone deserves it, it's him. His time writing for The Simpsons was the best time for the show, and now he has the best late night show on tv. Hell, he has for the last 10 years or so.

Conan has something that is similar to Headlines that is way funnier.

Hopefully Conan will keep "The Talking Heads" segments with politicans and media faces... that shit practically got Clinton re-elected for his second term.

now all I want is more "Clive Clemens' Inapproprate Responses" from Conan's satellite tv sketches...that, and more "Muppets: Faces of Death" and "Exploding Heads" channels (man, talk about great, funny as all hell, OBSCURE Conan sketches)

Son: "Dad! i just won the baseball game!!"

CONAN owns us all! I am just scared that he might have to tone down the show for the earlier time slot... :shame:

Carson > Conan > Leno

I was sad to see Carson leave when he did; he was truly a funny guy.
Leno... he has good character, but he just isn't funny.

Conan... he was annoying to me at first but his style of humor grew on me... i'm glad he's taking over. But 5 years? That's a long time indeed.
