If they can get the staple PC games (UT, Doom 3, etc.) running at pretty decent frame rates, they will sell some of these machines. I don't see them putting up numbers like any of the big 3, but it could be good enough to be profitable.

Personally, the collector weirdo in me likes to be able to actually hold his games, but I do think that ultimately they'll be downloaded instead of bought in a store. I bet this type of thing has EB & Co. more than a little bit nervous ....

Oh, and I thought this was pretty funny:

Phantom Rep.: "Are you left handed?"

Game Informer guy: "No, I just suck."

lolz

I dont really see the need for the Phantom.

There are already many services like this for PC's, you just dont need to buy another pc that hooks to your TV to play them.

Plus, that pad looked like garbage.

humm. basically this is a $200 box (plus $30 / month) that converts the image of a PC game to display nicely on a TV screen. still have to BUY pc games (that have been released for the system) at retail cost ($40 - $50 per download) that you will have no physical control over that are basically locked inside ur $200 box.

for $700 you get to use the basic package for two years. any new games you want to "buy" will cost you.

i predict a huge monster flop ngage style. all this is is a fancy video card with good tvout wrapped inside an expensive, very limited pc with a cool interface. get urself a nice vid card with tv out and you wont have to waste your time and $ with this shit.

i believe the next huge advancement in pc hardware will be vid cards and their ability to turn pc into a device that better integrates into your existing entertainment center. all this means really is a way cool way to compress and display a high quality image on ur tv. basically fake high res images. hmm i wonder...

I like the design of the box itself, but just the box. I'll get it when its dead (in 6 months) and when people will have turned them into stream server/rom box/media server with wireless keyboard/mouse.

Monster flop 3DO style.

I never understood how 3DO saw that having different manufactures as a good thing. Goldstar, Panasonic, and others?! They should have just stuck to one manufactur with one format.

3DO did have some great ports in Super Street Fighter II: Turbo and Samurai Shodown.

I just want to get ahold of one of those mouse keyboard lap things. It gets rid of the old tv stand that I hate.

I wont buy a Phantom but I will buy the keyboard mouse combo for it.

No, it's $30 a month for the service in which they will let you download a new game (you can pay to download more) and the console is free if you subscribe for 24 months. Or you can buy the console for $199 and pay month by month and at the end of 24 months they refund the price of the console.

3DO sold over 1 million units in Japan, more than the Xbox so far in that territory.

If they haven’t gone bust by then, didn’t the guy who’s making this run some dodgy companies before this?
