Which FF is better? 9 or 10?

Okay, I'm 7 hours into FFT, and I'm already thinking about the next game I'm going to buy. Since I've got a new PS2 (third one), I'm pretty excited to play more. Keep in mind, I think that FF4 is still the best FF made. I've only seen 9 and 10 being played, and played a bit of 10 before getting bummed out over the stupid ball game. I played FF9 on emu only. I seem to enjoy them both, but 10's voice acting really just threw me over the edge.

Which would you suggest I try to get into again? 9 or 10? Thanks. :)

I'd have to go with 9. Though choice, though. 10 definitely has its bright spots.

FF 10 is what made me stop playing RPG's.

Cant comment on 9 though cause I have not played it.

10 ruined RPGs for this cat.

*edit: I agree with Nesagwa.

FF9 by far.

FFX was good, but FF9 was plain incredible.

we've talked a lot 'bout RPGs in this thread a week ago

http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100289

my very personal suggestion?
go with something else, in a way or another you'll be disappointed of'em both

if you really want, then go with 9
FFX is SHIT, and the reasons, I explained in that thread already

FF9 is the most underrated of the series.

FFVI
FFIX
FFVII
FFX

In this order (haven't played I through V so cannot comment and these).

10.

The game starts out slow (meaning lots of watching), but if you can get over that hump, there's 100+ hours of *game* there. And it's fun.

The story line is well done. Got the love part down and got the mystery part down. The voice acting is well done. Dub haters will still hate, though, because that's what they know. The gameplay is well done. I think this has the most flexible battle system and customization system in the series (and really, of 95% of any RPG I've ever touched). You can find stuff that goes deeper, but this is a perfect balance.

If a world with a sport gets you down (who's ever heard of such a thing, I know), you only have to play twice.

9... I dunno. There's nothing really wrong with it I guess, but it just seemed too... "simple". Some people dig the more classic approach - I'd rather they keep blazing new trails...

I couldn't get into any of the FFs for PS1 (7, 8 and 9). When I started to play 10, I was immediately drawn into the story. I didn't find the main character whiny (like alot of people did), and I thought the story was mysterious and interesting enough to keep me playing till the end. In fact, I thought it was really worth the 80+ hours I spent on it (getting all the ultimate weapons was very very time consuming, especially playing that Blitz ball for Wakka).

I enjoyed 10 alot, even though alot of people hated it with a passion.

i would say 9 because its the only next gen ff that made me take a second look at it besides ff7. i havent even played it though, ive played all the others for at least a few hours and yes they are shit.

but play the suikoden games first. seriously. 1090 times better than any next gen final fantasy shit. (except suikoden 3 whcih was boooooring).

Most people hate FFX because it's extremely popular and seems to be aimed at brining in mainstream-non-rpg-playing gamers.

Get past that crap and you have a decent RPG story and battle system to play with. It has its faults sure, but it's a great game. Though I truely hated the dub. :(

FF9 though is the cream of the crop, talk about a fantastic RPG, Final Fantasy or not. Gives a huge nod out to old school RPG's. Great game on it's own though and IMO it has way fewer problems than FFX did.

10 is great, the sphere grid sucked.
But everything else about it has a certain shine to it.

9 is Also great.
and was a great way to finish the 32 bit FF games.

Get both , together they are like 30 bucks.

Can anyone tell me if FF:Crystal Chronicless is any good? :glee:

Yeah, Crystal Chronicles blows pretty hard. I only compared the two since I haven't gone all the way through either, and so many young kids love 10 (but then again, they don't know better, I guess).... not to say that 10's not good, that's why I asked.

Thanks again. Already bought 9. ;)

If you're going to play five, play it on the SNES. That game WAS great! 4, 5 and 6 are all great FF games for sure. Tactids is, too. I don't care what anyone says here, but I also love 7.

And 9, I'm glad I have it on the actual hardware and not an emu (computer) this time. I'm already seeing things are better on the PSX because you don't get those horrible FMV to static BG transitions as you do on emus.

Well, one game at a time, I guess. First Tactics, then 9.

To tell you the truth I really didnt liek either of them. If I had to choose to play one of them or die I would choose X. Only because I absolutly cant stand 9. X was way to linear but was nice to look at and the mood the characters gave off were amazing.

9 is okay, but I find the world and the plot hard to swallow. It was such an unbelievable mish-mash of characters and ideas. I never got the feeling while playing that there was really a big world out there. I also remember strongly disliking the end of the game story-wise. The gameplay is fine with me. For an RPG there's nothing to complain abou there, but nothing too special either. It had a few good challenges and the characters were varied enough in combat. I just didn't enjoy how the plot progressed at all. I didn't believe anything about the plot and I always hate it when they get too into that metaphysical stuff.

10 I went into thinking it would suck. I wanted to hate it. And in the end I really love the plot. It's the best FF plot looking back on it as a whole. The world was very believable and the story wasn't overly spiritual. It had some elements of that soul crap that always makes me uneasy, but that stuff wasn't all that important to the main plot and they weren't really annoying with it. The combat system was good and my only complaint is that you have to go to the menu so much to work on the grid. And blitzball sucks, but the game in FF9 wasn't too interesting either...

Is it wrong for me to have stopped playing FF9 in favor of FF8?

Yes, even though the draw system is tedious and the Guardian Forces are too easily abused, I still enjoy FF8's characters and story more.

And I was on the third disc of FF9 too. :(

I've been on an RPG binge as of late. Even went and bought a copy of FF7 to be played after I'm done with 9 and 8. Then I'll have to go back to FFT before trying FFX for the first time.

Eventually I'll burn out, I'm sure of it.

Actually if you feel this way they don't play 10 at all. I think 5 is one of the worst games ever in terms of plot and building a coherent world. Gameplay was a gigantic step back from 4. But if you liked 5 then you'll probably love 9 and hate 10. Just a guess.

FF9 plays like a disney film, I've mentioned this before. It has it's forms of comedy which you would probably enjoy more if you weren't already an adult. The trance system is useless and can't be controlled. Mainly my only complaint with the game. The card system was improved over FF8 but too complex for most to bother with. If you liked FF4 then I gather you would like FF9, it has roughly the same characters. It represents old-school rpgs. You also visit popular locations from previous games like the land of the gnomes. Not very original but it's mostly loved for the need of strategy in battles.

FF10 was supposed to draw in more than just RPG enthusiasts. It has great characters and a great storyline. Blitzball is actually great if you get into it. My only complaint is that character specific skills should remain. Once you go through the sphere grid every character can gain the same skills. But because the characters themselves are still different you can still use strategy to win. Personally I think it shits on FF9 but whatever.
