Former Sega UGA studio chief Tetsuya Mizuguchi yesterday lifted the lid on his long-fabled PSP exclusive project, revealing one of the more interesting titles destined for the Sony portable.

The game carries the name Lumines and is the first spawn of Q-Entertainment, Mizuguchi’s development studio set up in the aftermath of his defection from Sega and is his oft-rumoured spiritual successor to the acclaimed REZ.

To be published by Bandai in Japan, Lumines is described in the blurb from yesterday’s SCEJ presentation as being “An original title with a completely new style,” which doesn’t really shed light of proceedings.

However, from what we can make out, the player interacts with a set of blocks in order to manipulate a graphic equaliser, therefore impacting on the game’s soundtrack in some way. As you will know, REZ was a shooter/music game hybrid and it would appear that Lumines seeks to breed the puzzle genre with Mizuguchi-san’s electronica fetish, in very much the same way.

Expect updates from the Tokyo Game Show, where a full presentation is planned for Lumines, later this week.

Interesting tid bit.

Shame I'll probably never own a PSP. Guess I'll have to check it out on a friend's system when it comes around.

The Sega Rally series, Manx TT Superbike, Touring Car Championship, Space Channel 5, Space Channel 5 part2 and REZ as far as I know.

I knew he worked on Rez, but I had no idea about the other titles.

I absolutely hate techno, but I like Rez. It's an easy game to beat, but not to beat completely. That's a tough task.

While the music isn't my cup of tea, it works for the game. And as a whole, presentation wise, it's a beautiful game--a work of art IMO.

Rez is enjoyable as an experience more than as a game, and the boss battles alone are worth the ride - as mind altering as Radiant Silvergun, and splendid as Panzer Dragoon Zwei. The kind of thing they should give recovering drug addicts.

I've been looking forward to this announcement for a long time. Sounds very interesting. What with Darkstalkers and Winning Eleven, it looks like I may have to get a PSP after all.

Rez was awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing this in action, even though the chances of me buying a PSP are slim.

While we're on the subject....my EB manager buddy yesterday confirmed the Rez cheapo re-release at $19.99. Good times. A game that interesting should be tried at least once by everyone.

Did he mention when that might be happening? I have a friend who wants to buy it.

No date yet...it was just on a list with a bunch of other rereleases...nothing else noteworthy.

I just did a little research into it, and apparently PSM or OPM magazine said it was a rumored rerelease coming in November. But if EB is saying they are getting it, then it must be more than a rumor...

take away rez sooundtrack and would you have even enjoyed it? basically it was a musical shooter. you didnt even really have to move, just hold a button down in intervals before you let it go and kill everything. granted the music went very well with the graphics they mingled nicely but if you dont like techno whats there to ohh and ahh over? gameplay? nope.

i wonder if the same could be done with some sort of metal/punk/death/grunge theme complete with lyrics. yeah my musical taste is stuck in early 90s but wtf do games have to revolve around lame rap or techno. with ocasional japanese guitar solos.

oh yeah this psp game sounds interesting but prolly another techno pos.

Rez without the soundtrack would not be Rez, especially considering that the game overall was very music-influenced. We are talking about a whole product here.

beatmania with no music would be a shitty game as well.

For the "whole" package, you would need the trance vibrator... and a vagina.

we should start the stuck in early 90s musical taste club. stinky dinkins unmasked? or club member? Alice in Chains or Pantera inspired video game is where I'm at.
