hi all, ive recently been looking at a new television and am stuck between a plasma or lcd television, being the noob with working out all the technical jargon what would be the best for playing games on, i have heard that plasmas can go faulty if you play a lot of games on them, any truth in this ?
if anyone could give me some advice on this it would be appreciated

Check out this link. It pretty much covers the Plasma vs. LCD thing.

If you really want to go flat, weigh out your options. Both technologies have their advantages and disadvantages. I wouldn't even consider plasma right now unless you have money to burn. The life expectancy of a plasma tube just doesn't warrant the purchase at this point. And that's weather you play games on it or not--and I would not if I did own one. LCDs last quite a while, but picture quality doesn't touch a good plasma. Beware of dead/stuck pixel policies when looking at LCD displays however. I bought one a while back and had five (count em', 5!) stuck pixels all clumped together on a brand new set. A 17" widescreen for $700... fuck that. It went right back to the store. This and ghosting (i.e., pixel response time) are two of the major downfalls when it comes to LCDs. The ghosting thing is becoming less of a problem as the technology advances, which is a good thing.

Me, I'd just settle for a really nice flat tube HDTV 32" or bigger... assuming you have the space for it. I'll get a large flat set when the technology catches up and the prices become affordable.

I game on a 15" LCD monitor with an upscan converter, and it's pretty nice. It really doesn't compare to a nice CRT set, but space was a major limitation for me so I had to confine all my stuff to a small area. Just to give you an idea:

Ghosting is an issue no matter what the refresh rate is on an LCD. But the further back you get from the display, the less you see it. If I put my face up to mine watching a movie, it looks horrible. But from 3-4 feet away, I see no ghosting. Mine is spec'd at 25ms (which probably means even more for rise+fall). Current technology has sets at 16ms and 12ms. So if you're going to be viewing an LCD from a decent distance, I wouldn't worry about the ghosting too much.

Also, if you plan on watching TV (weather it's on an plasma or LCD), it'll look like utter shit unless you have an HD signal and you're taking advantage of it. Just something to think about...

Unless you're short on space or you just want a flat panel because they look nice (and they do if you're going for that minimalist look), go with a CRT. My friends have flat tube 32" HDs, and watching movies on those things is oh so good. And they're affordable to boot. You can get a really nice set for ~1G now a days.

ill be using the tv for games as well as movies and due to the lack of space that ive got (currently one room to myself) i did want something that would be off the floor and on the wall. ive got about $4000 to mess around with at the moment.
ill probably be viewing it at about 6 feet away maybe a bit more.

I have to agree with the CRT as a better choice for both movies and games.

If it's widescreen that you want, I just bought a Panasonic Tau 34" widescreen HD flat screen CRT. I can't stress how beautiful the picture looks and the size is just perfect (not small, not really big). I have yet to hook any of my shit yet in HD as yet but I can only imaginwe how good it will look even then.

If you still want an LCD TV, I suggest a rear projection LCD. Both Samsung and Sony make wonderful sets, especially the 42" version (has the same number of pixels as the 50" so it has better picture quality). My brother bought the Sony 42" last week. same day I bought my set, and the picture quality is wonderful. Plus, The rear LCD sets boast no burn-in (you can even hook up your PC to it).

My set cost $1,400 US and my brother's set cost him little over $2,000 (and he also got the stand).

Hope this helps.

If you've got that much to mess around with and you really want it on the wall, definitely check out some of the newer LCD sets coming out. Get a size in mind and go from there. A good place to snoop around on and post questions is the AVS Forum. Those people know their shit. I had another great forum link, but can't find it. If I do, I'll post it.

Wish I could suggest a particular set, but I'm not too up on what's come out recently, let alone in your price range.

Good luck. :)
