Sony mentioned that they would eventually release a smaller PlayStation2 system (or PStwo), but I believe it is too soon, considering that they had a price drop on the last E3.

Not only that, but they would have to make sure a smaller model would be able to hold their hard drive. The thing just came out six month ago.

Obviously, unless they plan to start producing external drives again.

Or if they are selling cheaply ($99), maybe they don't think people will also be buying the HDD for it? $99 for a system and then $99 for a single game (since I believe the HDD is still only available with FFXI)? Most people won't go for that. Neo Geo people may, since we like to spend money, but an average consumer probably wouldn't go for that.

Well, the whole $99 dollar thing is something I said would be cool. I don't know if that would be the price of the system if it does indeed come out. I would think it would be over $99 at least for a while.

Yes, but droping it to 99 USD would mean that they need to drop the price of the HDD/FFXI set as well. Oh, and definately destroy Nintendo.

It would be interesting to see if Sony can manage to pull such a stunt, especially considering that you cannot sell your "top" system for 99 USD and your portable one for 250+ USD.

Why not? I think most people expect that a portable system (with similar computational power) is going to cost more than a regular system - sort of like a portable dvd player.

That's Sony's biggest problem. They are spreading their focus out to too many ideas. Video, audio and... oh yeah, it plays games too! If they focused on gaming, as that's what it's supposed to be, I'm sure they could pull of a much nicer, GBA + a little bit pricing model. But Sony won't do that as, well, that's what Nintendo does, and even though they have shitloads of cash, they don't t have the same user base that Sony does.

One could argue that the PS2 having DVD capability was an initial selling point in Japan, as it was cheaper, supposedly, than stand alone players at the time. Of course, having a DVD player that also plays games helps Sony and friends to sell games to people who may not usually be playing them. In this instance I think NOT focusing on games helped, though it harmed them in the beginning as game sales in Japan for the first 6-8 months weren't all that great if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I'd say it was the DVD player combined with their massive success with the PS1 that really drove sales at first. Even if the system didnt' really have many good games to start with, we all knew eventually it would get some really great ones.

Most source report that it will launch at $149, same price has the regular one so has to not lose their market.

I blame this thread for making me have a dream last night that Nintendo was releasing something of a SNESone in 2004. I was really pissed off when I woke up.

I don't think gutting DVD playback capability is going to do much to the price point.
It has to have a DVD-ROM drive for the majority of games anyway.
I'd love to buy a cheap import PStwo to play KoF'94 ReBout though.

FFXI really isn't very much of a draw for the PS2 either. I think having it compatible with the HDD isn't a big deal at all.

they're already at 149 here.

Setting them down to 99 would kill the Cube and smash the Xbox in a heartbeat.

They're most probably holding this price up to christmas. they'll drop it in january then. Most certainly.

It would be nice if the PStwo kept the movie player (even if it removed the HD bay) and that it was contoured similar to the PSone so I can use my PSone screen, saving me from buying another one.
