That's Sony's biggest problem. They are spreading their focus out to too many ideas. Video, audio and... oh yeah, it plays games too! If they focused on gaming, as that's what it's supposed to be, I'm sure they could pull of a much nicer, GBA + a little bit pricing model. But Sony won't do that as, well, that's what Nintendo does, and even though they have shitloads of cash, they don't t have the same user base that Sony does.
One could argue that the PS2 having DVD capability was an initial selling point in Japan, as it was cheaper, supposedly, than stand alone players at the time. Of course, having a DVD player that also plays games helps Sony and friends to sell games to people who may not usually be playing them. In this instance I think NOT focusing on games helped, though it harmed them in the beginning as game sales in Japan for the first 6-8 months weren't all that great if I remember correctly.
