Best fighter ever? SF3 TS or VF4 evo/ft

Okay, I've always thought that VF4 was the best thing since sliced bread, and better than anything else... usually I feel that 2D were the best fighters, but then I thought this took the cake for them all. But after playing SF3 TS again with the PS2 version (which, btw, is fucking great), and seeing loopz's sig saying that it's the best fighter ever, I may be changing my mind again.

So, which do you feel is better? SF3 or VF4 evo/FT. I haven't played FT yet, but how could it not be a bit better than evo? That's what I hear, anyhow. Hell, for a while I thought KOF98 was the best. What do you all think?

My favorite is SF Alpha 2, but out of those two Third Strike is the best.

TS all the way.

VF4 is sweet and all, but nothing takes the place of a 2D fighters gameplay. The style of gameplay is just there that appeals to me in a way I can't explain.

I've developed an enormous appreciation for the Third Strike engine since I got SFAC. I have a giant level of respect for what Sega has accomplished in VF4 Evo.
I think you could almost make a case that VF4E is more of a fighting simulator, while SF3TS is the ultimate evolution of 2D fighting.

There's more than enough room for both.
Call it a cop out if you like, but lord knows these are both masterful labors of love by some of the world's finest programming talent.

Of those two, SFIII is my fav. I will say that VF4 is quite an effort for a 3D fighter, and isn't all that far behind.

SF3 has the most forgiving canceling of any 2D fighter I've ever played. Hell half the reason I love it so much is because it's so accessible but at the same time it takes tons of practice to become a master.

Plus playing it in the arcade or on PS2 makes parrying so much easier than it was on DC.

If they can make the Xbox version not lag horribly online, Third Strike will fucking own on Live.

yeah i still think the "best" fighter would be more accessible and or make it possible to win without using something like parrying.

I agree with this. 2D fighters and 3D fighters are two different things, and in my mind, they don't directly compete with each other.

Between the two, I enjoy 2D fighters more, but I think FFS is the best 2D fighter ever. And no, I'm not kidding....I'm probably just not objective enough.

@ Beelze: What you say about parrying is interesting, but I don't think it's as counter-intuitive as you seem to feel. Definitely no more than a regular special move felt at the time SF2 first came out. Even good old f,d,df+P was hit and miss at the very beginning. Now of course, anyone can (and does) do it in their sleep. I think it's just been a while since something like this was added to be such an intrinsic part of a fighter, so it feels weird having to adjust again. But for a brand new player, I don't think parrying would be any harder to learn to use than a Shouryuken.

Speaking of which, how do you parry? It is hard as hell and my little brother and I just do it without even thinking.

To answer the question, SF3 TS. VF4 is tight but I'm more of a 2d fighting fan. Besides, next to Guilty Gear, this is a smooth[/] 2d fighter and the new cast of characters wern't used poorly.

Both SF3 TS and VF4 are great fighters but I'll stick with SSF2T.

Well, I really can't pick one of the two as they are from totally different sides of the spectrum. However I would say they are in the top 5 of best fighters ever. I think the best fighters are(in no particular order):

SF3
VF4 (evo)
Soul Calibur
KOF 98
SF Alpha 2 gold
Last Blade
MOTW
CvsS 2

Doesn't get much better than that.

we've had this discussion many a time in the gameplay forums....

i think a good 2d fighter should be about creative offensive strategies and solid easy to master defence (which you break down with overheads, poking, etc).

3rd strike punishes offence to some degree (especially poking) and gives you the chance to do big damage off a parry just waiting for someone to jump at you...

thats why i much prefer 2k2 or rb2 and the like. i like intense attacking games (breakers rev, kizuna are some others...).

KOF2001 is my all-around fav. Best KOF to date. Best fighter to date.

Between the two given choices I'd have to say I like the more "Realistic" {i.e. no fireballs, sonic booms etc.} fighting in Virtua Fighter 4, though I do love SFIII: TS no doubt. *I will admit though that the VF series has never been too user friendly like Tekken.

That's a great list, right there. Add Tekken 2, and I would say we've named the best fighters ever made. Great list.

And Southtown Kid, I think the only person that loves FFS more than me is you. It's a great game, and also very deep. I actually like FFS more than any Street Fighter 2 game. I play SF2 now, and I enjoy it because of memories... not because I feel it's a good game. FFS walks all over SF2, IMHO.

"It's Third Strike Yo, it's... Street Fighter 3.. 3... III"

I'd have to give this to Street Fighter since it's really my fighting game roots. VF Evo is cool and all, but the gameplay just doesn't grab me like a good 2-d one. For that simple fact, Third Strike wins the battle.

Personally, I don't like parrying. I think it is far too powerful of a defense mech for it to be free. If it costed meter to parrry... yeah I'd be all over that shit. Once you get into that godlike timing that you see in so many competitive places, it gets just boring, and it makes the game boring. It's the one reason I've grown tired of the III series.

Guilty Gear XX(#Reload) on the other hand... is in my opinion the most perfect 2D fighting game ever made. It has a deverse, balanced cast (something 3rd Strike... no, most other 2D fighters can't brag about), and it's offensive and defensive mechanics are intuitive and balanced. The series was shit up until XX though, I have to say...

The VF4 series is of course, 3D perfection... I don't really need to say anything about that. I don't really see how you can compare the two games either, like others in the thread have mentioned.

Between those two I would go with 3rd strike. I have never really been able to get into VF games, any of them. Most will disagree I am sure, but as far as 3D fighters go, but the Tekken series is by far the best 3D fighting series as far as I am concerned.
