Does anyone know the name of a horizontal shooter circa '89-'90 or so, in space fighting motherships, etc., and you have a button which lets you turn around to go from left to right, into right to left to take another pass at things? I played it in Japan, haven't seen it here...forgot the name, but I've been looking for it or a port, ever since.

As for favorite right now, I was very impressed with Pro Gear. Plus, the small hit box makes me feel like a better player than I am.

Nope...in this game you're in a spaceship.... Thanks for trying, though. I'll keep looking if it takes another 15 years.

I love my new copy of GRADIUS V, but my fave shooter of the ones listed still = Blazing Star (Neo Geo), to me the game is just perfect in everyway. Great variety of ships and power ups, a kick ass intro, a psycho 2001ish Star Child for an end boss, and it's actually fun to play in the difficulty settings even on the hardest setting. I'd say after that I'd have to vote for Lords of Thunder {not on the list} and then Gradius V. ---But as for shooter that have come out recently, G-5 is king of the hill.

Voted: Thunderforce IV/Lightening Force. I simply have had more fun and more time with this game than my 2nd choice, Blazing Star.

Great poly-FM-Synth Metal, fantastic enemy designs, superb engine, and such a nice ending make this the king of H-Schmups that I have played.

And isn't Axelay a Vert Schmup or is it a hybrid V/H like Lifeforce/Salamander?

Raiden II is still my favorite shooter (horizontal or not). I really like R-type Final, and Gradius V is pretty good as well, but they both have this sort of generic, synthetic feel to them. I do really like some of the enemies in Final, and I also prefer its weapons to those of Gradius V. Gradius V, however, is definitely the more technically advanced of the two.

Winds of Thunder. Not only the best Horizontal shooter, but the best shooter period.

Axelay is half half so I put it as horizontal shooter.

For my money, Last Resort deserves a spot on that roster, and I think it's better than both Pulstar or Blazing Star.

Excellent gameplay, and better music and atmosphere than either the overhyped Pulstar or Blazing Star.

From that list...Gradius v

however there's no Progear, Einhander, and Gaiares, which are much better than a very mediocre Axelay.

Sexy Parodius is still my way to go (i love the music)

For these serious shooters though, i d say RType Final. The fact some levels vary depending on what you did the previous game is awesome, plus there are loads of different ships not all interesting but Bydo ones are amazing. BUT i have not played gradius V, and considering it comes from the same group that did Sylpheed PS2 and Ikaruga... i might change :)

Still, my favourite serious shooter is Einhander (multiple paths, great "directing" and ambiance, original view angles...)

edit: there might be a place for Spriggan Mark 2 on PCE-SCD and In The Hunt on that list :)

I didn't vote because it wasn't on the list. :oh_no:

I'd have to wait until the new wears off Gradius V, since I'm quite engrossed with it atm.

Seconded.

But are we talking about the arcade version or the SuperFamicom/SNES version because both are completely different animals.
