Since Gradius 5 has finally come out, I'd figured there would be some interesting debate into which shooter was better.

I for one am putting my money on Gradius 5 for some key reasons:

1). More colorful then R-Type
2). No slowdown compared to R-Ype's decent amount
3). Two player co-op mode
4). Better soundtrack
5). Made by Treasure
6). More enemies on the screen at once and less downtime

I really enjoyed Gradius 5 so much more. I feel that the idea of having all those cool unlockable ships in R-Type Final is great and all, but the game itself is a bit dry and when compared to Gradius 5, it just can't hold a candle to it. It just wasn't as good as Gradius 5.

Why compare them?

They are both kick ass shmups and I love them both equally.

Nah, R-Type Final is a week last game for the series. R-Type Delata was much better. Your start off ship in in constant suck mode.

I'll go with Gradius on this one. I really enjoyed R-type, but Gradius has always been my series, so having such a great example of the series with V pretty much concrete's it for me.

Ikaruga doesn't count? Not like its groundbreaking or anything but it is still Next Gen since its on GC.

How about Thunderforce V vs Gradius V

Dude, I'm the biggest Technosoft fanboy you ever met, and those two still aren't even close.
Gradius V is truly one for the ages...R-Type Final is a very solid game but it doesn't hold a candle.

Shock Troopers still owns Mercs for free.

Seriously, I get a buzz when playing GV like back when Alien Wars first came out, or like the first time you played any number of now-worshipped 16-bit classics. It's that good.

R-type Final for me. I still have to play them both a bit more before making a final decision, but as of now I prefer Final. Enemies, weapons systems, and atmosphere are three reasons why I prefer Final.

ign only gave it a 7.7 and said its nothing revolutionary. who needs to remove their head from their respective asses:

1. mainstream fuckasses over at ign.

or

2. fanboys.

i havent played either so i will reserve judgement. however 2 player co op is a must for my shooters.

I'll agree to agree with both of you.

To me: MERCS is great for a no bullshit, serious commando-style shooter, with some dramatic music and great visuals.

Shock Troopers is great for a more comical and slightly epic commando variety.

Both of these games are truly fantastic softs, both best in their genre.
