Because some dumb motherfucker out there is going to get it at their house, throw it in their system and find out it doesn't work, demand their money back and keep the item.

I have a Weta Aragorn statue (limited) that I am going to be placing on eBay for a friend. When something that originally sold for $120 new can't be had on eBay for less than $400 (and as high as $1200), then you can bet your ass someone out there is going to want to make sure everything is 'OK' with the purchase. Paul opened it to make sure everything was legit and nothing was broken, then put it all back. It's no longer 'new in box' but it's definitely in new condition. I think that's what the guy was getting at. I guess he should change it to 'like new.'

I had no idea that R-type III for SFC was so valuable, is that auction a fluke or does it usually sell for that much?

err, i wouldn't say i HATE it, but coincidently i ran across this ebay auction today:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8131315873&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

notice anything? How the fuck can that be new?

EDIT - actually i guess they never state it's "new" (though "sealed" implies newness), so technically i guess it's OK. Stll fucking shady though.

Yarrrr .... that's fucked up - very deceptive.

"Guardian Heroes Sega Saturn Import Rare Sealed"

and then we see .....

"Condition: Used"

 lol ~ OMFG internet

well... if he didn't say he tested it and just said it was new... how could you tell if it was used? Sfam, N64.... and some other Jpn imports, you couldn't tell if it was used anyway.

At least you know you are getting something that is working.

I feel the same way as the rest of you do.... if its to be new.. its untouched... BUT at the same time..... If something is new (with no seal) and I am going to pay some good money for it... I would almost want it tested and to know it works..... like Slerch said. To me, its still new then... and I know it works when it arrives.

I don't see why 'new' should necessarily imply sealed. Surely if an item is mint condition and has not been used then it is new?

When you buy a new Xbox/ PS2/ GC /PS1 etc... game in a shop they don't come sealed, does this mean they have to be considered 'used' in anal collector speak?

trust me man, i'm by no means an anal collector, but i DO like to be exact about language and terminology.

So yeah, "new" means sealed, if that's the way it was on the shelf. It's the condition it was in before it was sold, simple as that. A perfect example is one someone mentioned in another thread: if you wanted to return a game that had the shrinkwrap torn off and was opened once, but otherwise unused, would the store take it back as a new game? Fuck no, though i wish they would...

If they are open they are used. EB and Gamespot let there employees take games home so yeah if its open there its as good as used. They always use that same shit line. OMG you got the last copy so this is from the display box. Yeah right no thanks. I don't have a problem with used games just sell em as used. If I pay 200 more to get my Sakura limited edition Dreamcast new it better be new and sealed. If someone touched it yuck :(

in this manner its wrong..... selling opened CD's / DVD cases of PSX/PS2/Xbox/GC/DC ...etc.. as new is a bad thing. I had it happen to me at EBgames, I returned the game.

I also immediately return a game to them (rare game to boot) when EBgames put a HUGE sticker on the front of the case, and inside the case.....
They did it right in front of me before I could tell them to stop.
That is the worst ever! :very_ang:

SFC games never had shrinkwrap or anything over the boxes, so i don't see how anyone could call them new never opened, or why it would even matter. A mint version would look the same as one right out of a factory case basically.

Every game I've ever bought new in shops has been unsealed. They do not sell sealed copies in Europe as far as I know, must be a US thing.

Anyway with modern games who gives a stuff if they're sealed or not, they are not collector's items. I can understand people getting anal over the condition of AES games, but modern stuff is effectively disposable, ie no reasale value.

Oh and about that sticker, why not just peel it off?

That was just an example. We are just talking games in general.

I dont like the idea that other people have touched it, lol. Plus I want perfect mint. Just because its not neo dosn't mean you can't collect. I have my mint copy of Magic Knight Rayearth and it made me happy that it was new and sealed :)

too bad game stores don't think so though.. you could bring them a factory sealed game to trade/sell and they'd still give ya the used trade-in price for it.

then again, who'd want to take a game to a shop when you can sell it for much more then what they'd give ya for it on Ebay[or here]. :buttrock:
