Rangers Pitcher Arrested After Brawl in Oakland
Francisco Charged With Aggravated Battery After Chair-Throwing Incident
By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports

OAKLAND, Calif. (Sept. 14) -- Texas reliever Frank Francisco was arrested Tuesday morning on a charge of aggravated battery after he threw a chair into the right-field box seats and hit two spectators in the head during Monday night's loss to the Oakland Athletics.

One of the fans, an unidentified woman, was bloodied and her nose was broken.

Major League Baseball's commissioner's office said Tuesday morning that it was investigating. Francisco was cooperative after he was taken into custody, Oakland Police Department deputy chief Peter Dunbar said.

With two outs in the ninth inning, the Rangers' Alfonso Soriano tied the game 5-5 with his second homer of the night. Moments later, with Hank Blalock at the plate, the Texas bench and bullpen cleared.

After the game, Rangers manager Buck Showalter said the fans "went over the line."

"It was a real break from the normal trash you hear from fans. We've had problems about every time we've come here," he said.

On Tuesday, Texas owner Tom Hicks issued an apology.

"On behalf of the Texas Rangers, I want to apologize for the conduct of some members of our club last night in Oakland. Their behavior, especially the injury to a fan, was unacceptable. Even in a difficult or abusive environment, players should never be provoked into such actions," Hicks said in a statement, adding that he had been in contact with the commissioner's office.

Texas reliever Doug Brocail was seen screaming at a male fan, and the pitcher had to be restrained by his teammates and bullpen coach Mark Connor. Others also had to be held back.

Francisco threw the chair at a fan in a lower box near the Rangers' bullpen along the right-field line. The chair hit one man in the head, then bounced and struck the woman on her left temple.

Security ran to the scene and a small section of fans was cleared from their seats.

A's manager Ken Macha came across the field to speak to Dave Rinetti, vice president of stadium operations, before play resumed 19 minutes later.

There was talk between the umpires and managers of suspending the game, clearing the stands and forfeiting the game.

The Athletics won 7-6 in the 10th inning.

"From what I understand, there was some calls made to security early during the game but I have no idea what started it out there," crew chief Joe Brinkman said.

Rinetti said afterward that the woman was being treated at a hospital for facial cuts and a broken nose. Francisco was escorted by police out an alternate stadium exit after the game and into a car waiting on the field.

Rangers officials did not return calls Tuesday morning.

Brocail declined to comment, and Francisco wasn't around the locker room afterward.

Francisco, 25, was the American League rookie of the month for August, when he was 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA.

The teams meet again Tuesday night in Oakland.

For some reason, I have zero tolerance for basketball players who act up, but I love stories like this in baseball. I think it was one of our Dodgers who turned around and started choking out a fan a few years ago. It was the same season that Chan Ho Park delivered a beautiful flying kick to an opposing team member who rushed the mound. When Rick Fox runs around to the other side of the court and punches someone, it pisses me off, but if the exact same thing happens in baseball, it makes me smile. Dunno why.

There's plenty of assholes in this world who deserve worse. Good call on Francisco's part.

Anyone whose been to a Yankee/Red Sox game at Fenway know just how horrible people can get. It can be really funny when it is heckling, but sometimes it becomes something else. I can't condone throwing chairs, but I hope people realise it must have been more than typical heckling. For all we know he could have been calling him the N word for 9 innings.

Words are just that, words. It's fucking retarded that people are taking the side of the ballplayer in this issue. Maybe we should all be allowed to hit someone with a chair if they talk shit.

Personally, I hope this guy gets kicked out of the league.

So I guess you never heard of psychological violence which is a lot worse than physical violence.

If you're going to talk shit, it's your responsability to be able to back it up with your fists.

Someone who can't take some bad words from some people in the crowd for a couple hours is a fucking pussy.

Oh, and when did this person talking shit get to back anything up? The pussy threw a chair at the fan, knowing full well he couldn't do anything back. Like I said. I hope the guy gets thrown out of the league, then gets sued back to mexico.

I read the AOL article on this, and they noted that last season an Oakland fan threw a cel phone into the back of a Rangers' head. At least this Ranger threw the chair to his face. Crazy Bay area muthas. They should install fire hoses and just douse the stands at the fist sign of trouble. Get them all. Add some excitement to baseball.

Professional athletes need to grow the fuck up. These guys act like 3rd graders, partly because some of them barely made it past 3rd grade, and partly because they can get away with it.

I really don't know what all the outrage is about. You have nothing to worry about if you just go to games and watch. It's not like these players are randomly dangerous. I don't know if what the guy did was right or not, but I don't really care. Maybe the person deserved to get hit. It's not worth worrying about it.

From http://www.baseballlibrary.com » June 5, 1999: Dodger P Chan Ho Park aims a kick at Angels P Tim Belcher during a scuffle in LA's 7-4 victory. Park will be fined $3,000 for his actions and suspended for seven games. That description doesn't do it justice.

Do you not think the guy in the stands was acting like a 3rd grader?

Oops... my bad, I thought it was a bar fight or something like that since a lot of those things happens (kinda read way too fast... :( ). So forget what I said, yeah, it's just stupid since the fan paid to see the game, therefore he has the right to yell stuff as long as he doesn't throw anything at the players.

As much as it may seem like I'm defending the athlete which I'm not entirely, I'm just thinking he had more cause than some of you would like to think. Because they pay they can harrass players? If I was him, I'd file counter charges of verbal harrassment. Just because you pay you don't have the right to talk shit. You can't go to a restaurant and harrass the wait staff.

PS I think I'm spelling harrass wrong.

Yes he was, but he was a non-violent 3rd grader. There's a rather sizeable distinction, IMO.

Living near Boston and being a Sox fan (hence spending lots of time at Fenway), I can fully agree with this.

I don't think people realize just how big of assholes some fans can be, especially nearing mid-game when they've had six or seven beers in their system.

I can only imagine what kind of assholes they are. But these people get paid a ton of money to deal with kind of stuff. It goes with the territory.

BTW, that fan who threw a cell phone deserved to get his ass whooped. I hope they made an example out of him, just like I hope they made an example out of this ballplayer.

Believe me, I certainly don't condone a player acting in such a violent manner towards a fan (no matter what the insult), but I also don't expect every professional player to be able to stand up to the sort of verbal punishment that some fans can dish out.

I know I'd lose it if a fan told me, and I quote: "Get your stank Nigga ass off that base and go back to the cotton fields where you belong!"

Yes, that is an actual statement I heard a fellow Sox fan say to a player.

Granted, that sort of remark isn't something that's yelled every game, at every player, but it's also not so rare that you couldn't use it as an example of player abuse by the fans.
