I caught the original JP film this past Saturday at a theatre with my girlfriend. I had to drag her because she doesn't like scary movies at all. But this one interested her because it's the first film where the JP director of the original is directing an AMERICAN REMAKE (which will star Sarah Michelle G. AKA the Buffy chick)

Ju-On was just.... C-R-E-E-P-Y. Some Ringu meets Exorcist meets misc. other horror films. The movie has an odd timeline so you must pay attention to detail.

Some scenes were just plain out disturbing.

Sachie (the mom) was just creepy looking. If I saw her in real life, I would, as Busta Rhymes said in Halloween Resurrection, "get the fuck outta dodge." Some of the subtitles were off too, because my GF knows a smattering of Japanese, and some interpretations were off in the film. Just technical malarky for the most part.

But yeah, the boy Toshio was creepy. The dead woman was just plain ole disturbing. You gotta watch this at night with no lights to get the full effect. Director Sam Raimi said Ju-On is the scariest film he's ever seen!

I can't wait to see the American remake.

Any thoughts?

Just as with THE RING, and an earlier non-horror remake of La Femme Nikita that became Point of No Return... why does Hollywood remake films that are already SOLID to begin with? I'd say slap some subtitles on the flicks, advert the fuck out of the movies making people feel like they're missing the greatest thing in the world if they don't see it, and show the cinema for what it is. What are Americans to self important to stomach having to watch something with Asian or European talent?

I'm just waiting for Hollywood to remake the Vincent Cassel/Monica Bellucci crime noir flick DOBERMANN! because GOD forbid anyone have to read subs, amongst shitloads of other films that trounce all over Hollywood efforts.

:annoyed:

The Japanese version of the Grudge is great, and I am excited that barely anything will be changed for the US release, it looks to be a nearly shot by shot, reproduction judging by the trailer. Also I think it's incredibly cool that the Executive Producer of the US film, is non other than Sam Raimi, of Evil Dead Fame.

I just saw the trailer. I'm already excited with a full on, full tilt erection for this movie.

See that's my point, it's going to be a shot for shot reproduction, the only thing different being that it'll have Hollywood talent in lieu of it's original production cast... WHY? It just makes no goddamned sense at all, and I'm glad the rumors of John Woo remaking A Better Tomorrow and The Killer with Hollywood stars never got made.

I saw Juon and Juon 2 a few months ago. They're great, however I kinda wished I didn't see them, because I just bought a new house and will be moving in this weekend.... must block out the images I saw in the movie.... BTW part 1 is much better than part 2.
